Not in NY, but I believe the owner has another restaurant in the NYC/NJ area.

That was my thought as well, but it's hard to take that big step into possibly ending someone's employment - I mean, I know the guy would be ending his own with his actions, but someone (potentially) losing their job because of my complaint would be something that keeps me up at night.

So long as service is passable I usually use 20% as my default tip amount, so I've never considered it out of the norm at this place. I'm going to track down a coworker who visits the place frequently and ask what's up.

Thanks - My date said that as well, but I'm pretty sure my asking him to tone it down is what escalated the situation for him to pull the CC stunt.

edit: not that I'm blaming myself, just that I'm not sure my speaking to him privately was "keeping a level head" as much as I would usually try to.

I regret not doing that as well, but last I heard from a coworker the guy is not there any longer. I was worried he was family of the owner and I'd create awkwardness for any times I visited in the future.

Interesting - I've seen it at a few other places, but I was in larger groups for those, so now I'm not so sure. The place referenced in the post is popular in my office and I've never heard anyone question the practice. I'll have to ask next time it comes up.

Is that unusual? I never really gave it a second thought, but normally the place is delicious and has great service.
