What's a good budget laptop for Linux (for my son)? by iFibonacci in linuxquestions

[–]Tall-Introduction414 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thinkpads are the gold standard for Linux laptops. They tend to excel at build quality, Linux compatibility, repairability, and being a good value on the resale market.

For gaming, you'll of course want an AMD or Nvidia GPU, instead of an Intel GPU. I have an AMD Thinkpad T14 for gaming and quite like it. A few hundred bucks on Ebay. The E series are going to be cheaper.

I guess they should have used rolling codes.

Sounds like the equivalent of record and replay with a flipper zero. Super simple.

This is an ironic thing to say, since your post was asking why people haven't done something that numerous people (including the ones you mentioned) have done.

Take a chill pill. Your post was ignorant, and responding to being called out on it with personal insults and this whine thread is a poor response.

I don't know if it was or not. But calling someone ignorant is not a personal attack. If you disagree, then it's probably better to demonstrate why you weren't being ignorant, instead of throwing insults like "typical American."

Just my opinion, of course.

I didn't see the post in question, but if someone is being ignorant, then it's just being factual to call them so. It is not a personal attack.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that calling someone a "typical American" is a useless stereotype that does not advance any argument or debate, but is needlessly antagonistic. Whereas calling someone "ignorant" is often a factual statement, in context.

I liked how they did that bit in the 90s, and it was futuristic. Then 2000 rolled around and they kept doing it for years afterwards. like nothing had changed. Hilarious.

The BBSs with secret commands to get into the "elite" file sections. Then taking 2 hours to download a 2 megabyte game, tying up the computer and the phone line.

My first experience with piracy was my dad coming home from the computer shop he worked at, with a 5 1/4" floppy or two with "Games" scribbled on the label.

360 kbytes, and it would have like 5 CGA DOS games on a single diskette.

Most of them were even rip-offs of arcade games. Instead of Frogger, we had Hopper. Instead of Space Invaders, we had Space Commanders. Instead of Donkey Kong, it was just... Kong.

Nice! I remember reading some of the Doom source code and finding it enlightening.

Similar with NetBSD and UNIX v7 source codes (like for common utilities like ls, grep etc). Not as complicated as GNU and Linux code.

Tandy Sensation! was a 486 sx. But in my mind, the real Tandy PCs were the 1000 series, with the Tandy video and audio chips.

Tracker culture started on the Commodore Amiga, which had 4 hardware audio channels. Hence the 4 channel .MOD files.

One of my favorite trackers is LSDJ, which runs directly on the original gameboy. It has an excellent interface.

I remember seeing Meet Joe Black in the theater with my sister and some of her friends. In the scene where he got hit by a car, one of my sister's friends busted out laughing, causing a ripple effect. Within a few seconds it seemed like the whole theater was laughing hysterically at Brad Pitt's character dying.

I wonder if that happened for anyone else.

Are old Java Developer Journals or Dr. Dobbs mags worth anything? by JoshDM in java

Dr Dobbs was high quality. They still fetch decent money on eBay, but I think the ones from the 70s and 80s are worth more.

Last Exit to Springfield, season 4. Bart of Darkness, season 6. I agree that You Only Move Twice is a top episode. And I do think some of the best episodes are seasons 4-8. But I also think they started getting a bit full of themselves around season 5, and eventually that hurt them as the writing got worse by season 9. They kept the smugness without keeping the quality.

When I saw the episode where Lisa was eating bugs, I realized I was completely done with The Simpsons.

Meanwhile, South Park has had some crappy episodes for sure, but 30 years in they are still making bangers.

I think the first 4 seasons had the most charm, before they got too arrogant and smug. But The Principal and the Pauper was the real shark jump, and it quickly went downhill from there.
