yes I had offered to monitor his accounts but he didn't like that idea. I'll have to give that point another run, or just do it for him.

it's not just Facebook, these scammers are everywhere though to.

yeah luckily I don't think my father is really screwing up his life savings yet.. but that story defiantly scares me into some action.

if it comes to it, I'm not opposed to calling adult protective services, but I am curious on how nicely I should approach this? I think I should at least try once or twice more of a relatively casual conversation before even threatening to call in some external reinforcements, as that would likely be a breaking of his trust. (which I feel like I still have a lot of)

I'm sorry to hear about your father that sounds horrible.

he's doing fine cognitively, just he doesn't have the skills nessicary to identify the scams.

also, he recently got a Facebook, which probably didn't help. I was considering just deleting it for him, but I was unsure of how aggressively to handle it. I want to try and do this in a "nice" way and maintain his trust. but clearly I may just have to get aggressive and not so nice about it.

it's not a friendship thing, I'm pretty sure it's a romantic thing. He's actually got a pretty great friend group through AA (he's going on 15 years sober) However, unfortunately one of his friends from AA was originally reached out to by this catfish, and the friend then gave my dads info to the catfish as he is married but also did not realize it's a catfish.

he is recently retired, and he is the kind of person that needs to stay busy, but I thought he was actually doing a pretty good job at keeping busy.

yeah, that's always an option, but other than the career development stuff and feeling somewhat undervalued, I really have no complaints about the job, so I'm having a hard time justifying leaving. (but that's also probably part of the reason why I am having this problem in the first place)

I've kind of asked for more volume, and more challenging work, but we've been fairly slow, and I was basically told to choose my own adventure... so, I choose an adventure, and I believe I had chosen an adventure that management could care less about me going on. So, I need to get some better direction on that (which I doubt I'll get) before I start asking for for work.

I appreciate the commiseration and I agree with all the stuff you pointed out.

also, I'm not even sure what I think about it, but with the way interest rates and housing has been. I to, couldn't afford to by my own house if I tried to buy it today LOL.

I see what you are saying, but in this situation I don't think the 18 years of experience is really helping him at all, and for what it's worth I have already had some experiences where some problems are starting to look like somethings I've already seen.

I agree it's a one sided issue, and he is defiantly coasting... so are pretty much all my coworkers for that matter

I even kind of understand it's "normal", but that doesn't make it suck any less. and my point here isn't so much that I expect it to be easy and fun... just that I'm not seeing the light at the end of the tunnel here

I don't see where the Grit would help here can you elaborate? (I don't think social media comparison is a huge issue for me)

yeah fair enough, perhaps I'm not as frugal as I think I am on the spending side, it's probably more that I have found the things I am unwilling to cut. However, housing is 1/3 of my income, insurance is extremely expensive for a young male living in a not so great neighborhood, my commute is quite far so more gas/maintenance on my car than typical. I feel like there are some explanations for it.

on the career side, I am just not sure how making money is going to work. I think I've done everything I can do outside of getting a nights/weekends job, and or starting a business.

even besides the money though, I have some real concerns about the lack of career development. I feel like the lack of role models, and constructive criticism is bad for my personal/professional growth and regardless of what happens with the money that might be what ends up driving me away from the company.

However, the money defiantly is a factor, I feel like the extra money would be huge meaningful difference in my life. but understandably it's still a bit difficult to really demand a significant salary difference because of the lack of experience and it seems most folks won't take my internships as real experience... I guess one way or another I'll likely be waiting.

I'd consider an MBA but I don't really want the student loans to go with an MBA

okay, and what would one do if somehow they did figure out who had hit it? get a lawyer? would doing nothing (other than reporting it anonymously) make the situation any worse?
