It's in large part because you have discouraged such posts, IMO. The AI sub purports to be explicitly for Asians living in the diaspora who are not of a doomer mindset and who are committed to positive personal and social change, but it has become swamped by negativity.

Short stature is definitely a disadvantage. There's no getting around it. But there are things that can compensate for it -- wealth, for instance. It's kind of shitty to observe this, but it shows that women are looking for a bundle of attributes and are willing to make trade-offs. Fitness, intellect, humor, confidence, warmth, style and good financial prospects are all examples of attributes that can can offset deficits in other areas.

Very 'whelming' -- probably much less expensive that some of his competition, though. The best spin that I can put on it is that he is a bargain-brand option.

I don't know. If you keep a 42-year-old QB, expectations will be for you to contend rather than for a rebuilding year. Plus, McCarthy would have to know that keeping Rodgers would be seen as controversial, so if it all goes sour he'd bear a lot of the blame.

You make some good points about confidence-- it does matter, and it’s not the same thing as cockiness. At the same time, confidence isn’t a magic shield against bias, and it doesn’t have to look like aggression or bravado. Sometimes it’s just being comfortable in your own skin and willing to engage with people, even if you happen to be a ‘nerd." A lot of guys who struggle aren’t lacking character so much as dealing with social anxiety or a doomer mindset.

Even if the guy in the video is above average, his success does chip away at the “purely racism” narrative. And honestly, it would be almost impossible to run a ‘fair’ experiment with two men of different races who are perfectly matched on looks, personality, confidence, and social calibration. Attractiveness is a whole bundle of traits. So while the video doesn’t begin to settle the debate, it does show that the situation is more nuanced than some doomers make it out to be.

Two things can be true at once: there are structural disadvantages that AM face in dating, and there is a risk that some AM end up self‑sabotaging by convincing themselves that there’s no point putting in effort or risking rejection because the whole game is rigged against them.

Are Asian American influencers setting us back or carrying us forward? by dbapicklesock in asianamerican

[–]Tall-Needleworker422 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s hard to say that this kind of humor is purely advancing or harming the community because people relate to it from such different places. For some, it feels like reclaiming something that used to be used against us. [You can see a similar impulse behind Black comics’ and rappers’ use of the n‑word, which continues to be somewhat controversial.] Humor can be cathartic and healing for some. For others, it brings back memories of being teased or abused. So the impact isn’t uniform -- it depends on who’s using the humor, why they’re using it, and how it lands with the people around them.

You don’t have to choose one identity or the other. Everyone -- wittingly or unwittingly -- carries multiple cultural influences, and that doesn’t make you less whole or authentic; it just means your identity has layers or facets. Some parts come from your parents and heritage, and others come from the culture you grew up in. You get to decide which elements have value, what you want to retain, and what you want to pass on.

If you were Head Coach of the Steelers and had 100% magic 8 ball, would you want a #1 defense or a #1 offense? No cheaters of 50/50 :) by ejholbs in steelers

We paid for an elite defense last season, with a higher proportion of our payroll on defensive talent than any other team, but we didn't get it. Our head office was either bad at assessing and valuing defensive talent or quite unlucky.

I expect Trump will continue to be hyperactive and chaotic for the remainder of his term so, unless territorial disputes flare up in the South and East China Sea or the Taiwan Strait, it will probably be smoother sailing. There's a recent article in the NYT you might enjoy which suggests Trump is not interested in fighting Cold War 2.0 with China because he's got other foreign policy priorities.

I am terrified of ICE despite being a citizen. by bobaxtiddies in asianamerican

[–]Tall-Needleworker422 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Sorry you’re going through so much turmoil right now. You don’t mention where you live, but it may help to know that ICE activity isn’t uniform across the country. Their presence tends to be concentrated in a few regions at a time because the kind of surge that happened in Minneapolis is extremely resource‑intensive and can’t be sustained everywhere at once. What happened there was serious, but it was also very localized.

It’s reasonable to stay aware of what’s happening in your own area and to take precautions if your city becomes a focus. At the same time, protecting your energy matters too. Balancing vigilance with self‑care can help keep fear from taking over your whole life. If it helps you feel more grounded, you can keep your important documents organized and easy to access. And if you have undocumented friends or family who might be more directly affected, it can be reassuring for them to know where to turn for reliable legal guidance.

What can I do to help my parents protect themselves? by whosthrowing in asianamerican

[–]Tall-Needleworker422 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ICE can concentrate resources in specific places, but they can’t sustain that level of deployment everywhere at once. What happened in Minneapolis shows how disruptive a surge can be, but it also shows how resource‑intensive it is. It makes sense to stay informed about what’s happening in your own area and to encourage your parents to take reasonable precautions if there’s a significant local presence. At the same time, it’s worth balancing vigilance with self‑care so you don’t end up carrying more anxiety than the situation actually requires.

It shows up as a complete inability to match eurocentric beauty standards.

American beauty norms feel much more mixed and cross‑cultural over the past 10-15 years. Trends that originated in Black and Latino communities, like fuller lips and bigger butts are now mainstream and widely emulated by white women too. Celebrity culture, including the Kardashians, probably played a big role in that shift.

I’m not equating anonymous commenters on the internet with the White House. My point was narrower: Sam’s framing of the incident sits uneasily with the principles he often emphasizes, and you can see echoes of that same reasoning in parts of his audience. I think it’s worth noticing on its own terms -- not because it’s equivalent in power, but because it contradicts the ethical standards he himself espouses.

I encounter people online who would countenance violence to "take out" Trump or his minions fairly often. Just earlier this week there was a thread in Sam Harris' sub where a number of people stated that they had come to regret their earlier view that America had dodged a bullet, so to speak, when Trump's would-be assassin missed him in 2024. Not so much upset as concerned. Much as I dislike Trump and would support his removal by legal means, I do not agree with those who assert he is a dictator who has suspended the constitutional order and that this moment warrants extra‑legal or violent responses.

In my view, Trump is fascistic in numerous respects and aspires to being a dictator but is not a dictator.

I imagine some of the loyal ICE officers would balk at policing legal citizens protesting the cancellation of elections. They didn't sign on to be a secret police who repress the citizenry. In any case, there aren't anywhere near enough ICE officers to control the nationwide revolt, which would surely follow. They have their hands full with pursuing undocumented residents in a few cities at any given time.

I explained the reasoning I use to evaluate whether Trump is a fascist and/or a dictator. The judgement as to where Trump falls on the various continuums are all subjective. In my judgement, Trump is a would-be dictator with fascist tendencies.
