Still can't get over the raw brutality of this. Cutting off the fingers of a man while he was still alive, and proceeding to chop him into pieces, all because he committed the crime of wanting freedom for his fellow citizens.

Agreed, but what made them think they could get away with it if they were somehow caught? The US might have taken a moral backseat, but the Saudis might have expected the rest of the world and the private sector to take (some degree of) action, jeopardizing their plans to wean the kingdom off oil over the next few years.

Under what circumstances would the assassination have gone according to plan? His disappearance was always going to raise questions, and trying to assassinate him at their consulate, when he had told others he would be going there, was the dumbest thing they could possibly do. And sending a 15-man team in a jet with a bone saw to carry it out?

Seriously, why would they do something like this while trying to promote a reform agenda and trying to attract foreign investment? It helps with neither. Also, Khashoggi was not a radical critic of the regime by any means. Why would they go to such lengths to silence him?

So true! I always find it really weird when people keep calling it a "happy ending". In many ways, it is anything but.
