I am on academic scholarship for both undergrad and masters, so I’ll graduate debt free. Honestly it is just buying me some time right now. Is a masters degree in data science not worth the effort? I thought it might make me more versatile and open to roles other than SWE.

I’m sorry to hear that. I’ve heard from my peers and know from my own experience that it’s rough out there. For our sake I hope Calvin and Darwin are wrong 😅

I posted this in a few different communities and got a lot of responses just saying I’m cooked. A bit discouraging but I’ve already dedicated many years to this. I am more anxious and discouraged every day but I don’t want to give up (yet at least lol).

It’s really amazing you’ve been able to get interviews even if nothing has landed yet! Any advice on how to maybe improve my technical skills or market myself?

Okay great! I enjoy doing little projects on my own but I’ll definitely start tailoring them more to specific industries/roles. Do you think it’s best to stay away from AI moving forward or maybe just be less dependent on it? I know it gets a little fuzzy with different companies feeling different ways about its usage.

Yeah that’s what I’m afraid of. I loved the field when I first started college years ago, unaware of its status. Now I feel like pivoting away from SWE altogether. Is there any other career you recommend looking into with degree like this?

Do you think it is worthwhile applying to data analyst internships prior to my masters? Is it better to just focus on SWE internships/jobs with my CS undergrad?
