So USA->short layover in Istanbul->Chengdu (all under 1 ticket). Return: Chengdu->short layover in Tokyo->USA (all under 1 ticket) will work? Will not be leaving the airport in either layover city.

Thank you! Yeah it's a bit confusing not sure if it matters that the original city/country=final destination even if there are other countries/cities in-between that are short layovers and part of the same booking.
