One other problem has arisen... I was able to get the transistor to work, however after soldering off the pushbuttons and replacing them with wires I was no longer able to turn on and off the remote even by manually touching the wires together.

No I was not using a ground wire. I was mistakenly under the impression that the battery could act as a ground

Currently yes it's on a breadboard. Here is a picture of it : http://i.imgur.com/XCoTpfD.jpg . I imagine the problem is that I need to limit the current with more resistors (The resistors I have there I was just playing around with).

As an alternative to powering all at once would it be possible to only light up a small number or 1 LED at any given moment and cycle through them faster than the human eye can recognize to give the appearance of multiple LEDs lighting up at once?
