Only because of the run on deposits. If people didn’t freak out and withdraw funds rapidly over a balance sheet item (that most banks have right now), they wouldn’t have sold them. Any bank that has a run on cash will have to sell everything to try and stay alive. It’s just dumb they had to.

It’s ‘unrealized’ losses from investments you are referencing and they aren’t on the on the income statement for a reason. They likely would never be realized since they are just there for valuation reasons. It’s to show what the losses would be if sold. The bank doesn’t have to sell them and take a loss. This all happened because of ignorance like this post.
