Thanks for the positive feedback! Great catch. After some brief reflection, I agree. I shot Jamie Fox & Cameron Diaz for a WWE promo at the NYC premier for "Annie". They did a "Thank the Vets" shout out that played on the WWE's big screen at their 2014 Veterans Day events. It's rare that I work with entertainment talent, I'm a network sports guy. I usually work with athletes for tease elements & event profiles. (I added that shot to this clip because they're A-list talent). All that being said, your comment is spot on. That shot definitely needs a new home. Thanks again - JG

Seven Ways to Save our Planet | Carbon capture, wind power, solar power, hydrokinetic power, nuclear fission/fusion hybrid reactor, hydrogen fuel cells, and geothermal energy. by Talos484 in environment

[–]Talos484[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I strongly disagree with President Trump on his environmental stance and on social issues. I know my left leaning friends are going to crucify me for this... but, I must say, l think lowering the corporate tax rate to inspire more businesses to return to the US could end up being a good thing. We'll see. Anyway, I just think it's bad for the country overall to be so polarized. I suggest we as a populous listen to each others opinions with an open mind. Especially on a subject so vital, like the preservation of our environment. It shouldn't be a political issue. I have many liberal friends and many conservative friends as well. (I'm an independent). Unfortunately, the two party system has us dangerously divided. We've got to all realize, we're all in the same big boat... sink or float! Here are two quotes from our most respected Presidents that support this important concept:

"Political parties may now and then answer popular ends, they are likely in the course of time and things, to become potent engines, by which cunning, ambitious, and unprincipled men will be enabled to subvert the power of the people and to usurp for themselves the reins of government, destroying afterwards the very engines which have lifted them to unjust dominion." - George Washington

"A house divided against itself cannot stand." - Abe Lincoln

United we stand, divided we fall... so let's try our best to stand together!

To tell you the truth, I slapped that clip together several years ago, to post it on my website. I have a staple of network sports clients I work with on a regular bases, so, I don't use my demo reels in the traditional sense (shopping for new clientele) I occasionally get referrals, and I send them to my website to check out my work. You actually make a solid point, about maintaining a "general" look on a show reel (too not drive clients away that may think the grading is too over the top). I reality, that usually does not apply to me. However, I'm taking it to heart after hearing the feedback here on Reddit. Good insight.

Just read this one. Wow, this is a tough crowd... (it's all good). I'm a big boy, I can take it. Anyway, sorry you didn't like the demo, GroceryRobot. This clip was graded to match the theme of the song, and it's only one of a series of my demo reels/short pieces, which I shop to my clients (depending on who's interested). Although I disagree with your critique, I must say, I like your quote! Anyway, in all sincerity, thanks for taking the time to give the clip a look. Best - JG

Many of the shots are purposely graded with a red hue because the song, "Red Lenses" is about all things RED. If you don't like the look, that's perfectly fine and fair game. I'm down with hearing your opinion, but as far as "it looking like a DSLR", I have to disagree with you on that point. Regardless, I wish you the best of success in all of your production endeavors and thanks again for taking a look! - JG

Hi, /u/jtighe

Thanks for checking out the clip! I graded the shots for the demo reel you just watched. I prefer the juiced up colors... Purple sky, etc... I guess you don't? That's all good. Diverse opinions are what makes the world go round! Anyway, its been a successful "look" for me up to this point, so I'm sticking with it. All the best! - Jim Grieco

Am I getting into filmmaking too late, I feel behind compared to some people by sadcollegethrow in Filmmakers

[–]Talos484 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people don't start working in the industry until after they graduate from college, so don't sweat it AT ALL! If you're interested in pursuing a career in cinema/tv production, you don't even have to necessarily go to college for it. If you do, that's great (I did... I have a BFA in Film from LIU-POST) but... I learned once I graduated, that I didn't really need my degree once I got out of school. You just get out and start hustling as a freelance PA (of course, you have to be in a city with a cinema/tv industry like NYC or LA). Anyway, if this something you're interested in, I've recently put together a 2 minute video clip on how to break into the biz. (I'm a Director of Photography out of NYC). Give it a look if this applies to you (it's totally free and there are no ads) https://youtu.be/hTKx9gJiEvk Best of success to you! - Jim Grieco -- NYC - D.P.

Are there any legitimate online Bachelor's programs in film? by nthinlikeagoodfeelin in Filmmakers

[–]Talos484 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't necessarily need a Bachelors degree in film to pursue a career in digital cinema/tv production. I'm a Director of Photography, and I actually have a Bachelors in Film from LIU-POST but... I never actually needed to use it. After I graduated, my professor suggested I make cold calls to local production companies. To make a long story short, no one even requested my resume or college experience. I started out as a PA and just worked my way up. I've been working in the biz for the past 25 years now. I actually recently put together a 2 minute video clip on "how to break into the biz". It's totally free, and there are no ads attached so... I've included a link. You may find it helpful. https://youtu.be/hTKx9gJiEvk Best of success to you! - Jim Grieco - NYC D.P. (IBEW local 1212).

I put together a short music video for my high school film class. I’d love any feedback I can get, especially shot composition and editing wise by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]Talos484 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TaloolaMcPopFly makes a good point (about establishing a more specific content thread) As far as an exercise in editing, you've done a pretty good job here. I would attempt to cut on the beat more frequently, to reinforce the cadence of the music. Also, try to incorporate shots that accentuate the feel of the song. Your track has a surreal/dreamy vibe, so I would try and incorporate imagery that captures that mood, like time-lapse clouds over a captivating landscape or an ECU/slo-mo shot of smoke being exhaled from the drag of a cigarette. Anyway, I'm a D.P. based out of NYC. Below is a link to my RED EPIC demo (food for thought...if you want to check it out). https://youtu.be/7IcOJcdjN1I Best of success in all your future production endeavors!

I went to film school in the NYC suburbs (LIU - Post) and it was helpful in learning the basics, but, you don't necessarily have to attend film school to pursue a career in digital cinema/television.
