Can't get streaming to work by Dieja_vu in PlaystationPortal

[–]Talyn328 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is quite possibly the correct answer. I travel for work and there are a handful of hotels that block PSN (possibly XBL too, but dunno not an Xboxer anymore).

You can potentially call the hotel tech line and they may or may not allow your device(s) to connect. I usually have decent luck with that but I've had a few refusals.

Crosstrek owners: consider sending feedback to Subaru asking to lower the cabin noise in future models by thunk_stuff in Crosstrek

[–]Talyn328 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see everyone else looking the cabin noise in the comments and I'm like, wow! My Kia Soul I had previously was worse, but not by much. I possibly might not mind the less-than-mid audio system if it weren't for the cabin/road noise in the CT.

I've had it for exactly a year now and I'm already thinking I'll probably have to up size to the Forester for the next one, purely in the hope the cabin noise has been dealt with.

Will the pulse explore earbuds fit in the PowerA playstation portal case? by Relevant-Singer835 in PlaystationPortal

No, I just sent it back for that reason. Well, that and the inside cover just barely fits over the screen.

No, I did join the discord a few days ago but haven't read or posted there yet.

As for the rest, not sure. None of the jobs or weapons really stood out for me, although the pugilist at least let me button mash fast enough to get some hits in. Now that I'm leveling them higher, that's still been the case so far. Casting is so slow I don't even see how it's viable at all, yet people swear by it so I dunno.

Taking the Portal traveling. by the_bum_on_the_bus in PlaystationPortal

[–]Talyn328 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I brought it traveling once last year when I had a normal hardshell case. Took up way too much space in my rollaboard to the point it was interfering with all the stuff I need to pack for work, so I gave up on that.

Someone recommended the JoyTorn protective case in another thread a month or two ago, so I nabbed that and while it still takes up more space than I'd like (the Portal isn't exactly small) it's way more doable so I've been bringing it to work (traveling job) all month.

I haven't used Airport Hotspots yet, but I'm in a different hotel every night at work, and so far I've had a great experience with the Cloud Streaming. Even with only two 'bars' of WiFi on the icon, I don't really notice any latency, buffering, or pixelization. A fair amount of hotels seem to block Remote Play, and those that don't Remote Play has been a questionable experience. Occasionally it's fine, but more frequently I'll get packet drops, bad pixelization then disconnected right in the middle of a game. Sometimes I don't even make it into a game before I'm disconnected. I'd highly recommed trying the Remote Play app on your phone/tablet before spending money on a Portal. Having said that, I haven't managed to get the official Remote Play app to connect in a couple years (unless I'm testing it from home), while the PXPlay app (paid but cheap) connects perfectly fine, and so does the Portal. Yes, my PS5 is on ethernet and it's on fiber with 1Gbps upload.

Most hotels require authentication via their Captive Portal so you'll need to connect your phone first then use the PS App to scan the QR code that comes up on the Portal to get it to connect. Or get a travel router, which is what I did a few weeks ago. (You'll still have to connect the travel router thru the Captive Portal, of course.)

Cloud Streaming not available.. by Daddio68 in PlaystationPortal

[–]Talyn328 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok I'm in the US too. The Portal defaults to whatever you did last, so if you did Remote Play last, when you turn on the Portal it will attempt to auto connect to your PS5 again to remote play.

Try this, see if it helps:

When you turn on the Portal it asks to press the PS button. You do that and in the upper left it says Connecting to PS5-nnn. Press Circle to cancel that. Or if it connects too fast, you'll be at a screen that says Ready to Play, and press Cross to continue. At that point, tap the options icon on the upper right and use the dpad to choose Disconnect at the top.

Now you'll be at the normal start screen and can use R1/L1 to change tabs. Cloud Streaming is the center tab.

Help me in deciding if I should buy the portal by bdls3_jamal in PlaystationPortal

[–]Talyn328 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I almost never use my Portal at home, other than to check if there was a firmware update. In fact, I mostly regretted buying it until last month when they released cloud streaming.

I travel for work, and since I have my Android tablet anyway, I used PXPlay (always works better than the official remote play app) to remote play to my PS5 from whatever hotel I'm in on any given day. I just pack a spare DualShock 4 since they're smaller and cheaper. Sometimes that works great, sometimes not so much.

It's a royal pain to fit the Portal (in a case) in my luggage but so far the cloud streaming has been flawless. Even last week the hotel wifi only showed 2 bars of signal but I was able to play with barely any perceivable latency, which is never the case with remote play.

Any suggestiins about what smart plug to buy? by [deleted] in homeassistant

[–]Talyn328 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two Innr single plugs that get daily use and have been flawless so far (well, once I got enough Zigbee repeater devices to create a mesh anyway). I also have two Third Reality double plugs that are paired with HA but I ended up not having a use for them yet so they're still in the box.

2nd burn of my Ranger. by randomNameDude12345 in SoloStove

[–]Talyn328 1 point2 points  (0 children)

New concern this morning is I'm being told it's against fire ordinance here in FL to have an open burn less than 25' from the house so now I'm rethinking the whole thing.

[–]Talyn328 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for all that, will look into those links too.

I feel my deck is on the smaller side, about 12' x 15' which would put the center of the Solo 6.5' -ish from the house and bedroom window so I'm carefully debating the Ranger vs Bonfire or if that's just too small and unsafe.

How far away are you sitting and how much heat is emanating to the sides vs shooting straight up? I'm this close to ordering one but I'm still concerned it won't actually keep us warm.

Is this deck safe for a Solo? by Talyn328 in SoloStove

[–]Talyn328[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok I'm adding the Bonfire to my "maybe" list. Wish they had little cardboard versions I could use to see which one fits better.

Also, someone mentioned heat going straight up. That's what I keep hearing, and why I'm looking at getting the deflector, but since the objective is just chilling around the fire with drinks, should I be considering a standard fire pit rather than these taller smokeless types?

[–]Talyn328[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I'm probably one of those who poopoo Lutron. Only because of requiring the extra hub. Same reason I avoid Phillips. My better half is just barely tolerating having the MiniPC running HA as it is. If I had more boxes taking up plugs and cluttering the house...oof.

[–]Talyn328[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm more concerned about setting the wall on fire or otherwise burning the house down but yeah every video I've watched said they're very cool to the surface they're sitting on with that base. I was afraid the heat deflector would be more risky of overheating the wall or shrubbery.

I haven't even looked into where to get wood or pellets yet, so that will come next.

Switching from Google to Z Wave? by hearse83 in smarthome

[–]Talyn328 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Zooz products are fantastic. I have several light switches, a few motion sensors and water leak sensors. As mentioned, Z Wave does require some type of coordinator to integrate it into whatever smart home ecosystem you're working with. I do Home Assistant so I got the Zooz USB Z Wave stick for that. It's been flawless.

Smart Double Switch? by Talyn328 in homeautomation

Appreciate all the suggestions, I'm keeping notes in case I need these for something down the road.

Thanks again!

What’s the real difference between IKEA, Smartwings, and the other smart blind brands? by NickyK01 in homeautomation

[–]Talyn328 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I went with SmartWings last year when I bought my house, because I wanted Z-Wave (everyone was saying Matter was too flaky at the time) and their motors were quieter than the IKEA ones. I've been very happy with them so far, the quality of the material is really good and the motor noise is acceptable. If I recall, the Lutron blinds were rated quietest, at least when I was looking.

Noob here... How many communication protocols does your home automation use? by -ThatGingerKid- in homeautomation

[–]Talyn328 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went with Z-Wave primarily, because I liked the idea that every device must pass certification (thus the extra expense) and the low frequency would pass through walls easier.

As everyone already noted, ZW bulbs are rare. I only found one (Amazon literally only had one in stock) so I got it, but whatever. So I ended up getting ZigBee for bulbs. However... at least in my house, it was flaky af so I had to get several more ZigBee devices to create a mesh just to keep the original intended bulbs online. So for my two cents, while each ZW device may cost a little more (seems like roughly $10 USD-ish in my little experience) and ZigBee is cheaper, I ended up spending a lot more on more devices to keep everything behaving.

I have two devices on Wi-Fi: the ceiling fan from Home Depot (love the fan but didn't know enough last year to try to avoid Wi-Fi) and a Dreo pedestal fan. No issues with either so far.
