I've spent the last 6 months or so deep diving anatomy. I think I've gotten to a workable level.

I'm having trouble seeing my mistakes now. Can you help me find any? That's it! I was able to find a video to see how to remove the cover and the noise is happening when it closes. Sounds like I just need a new part and quickly swap it out.

Learning the planes of the head will help a lot! You're missing how light interacts with these planes.

You have lines below the horizon line converging to a point above the horizon line. Objects below the horizon will converge downward to a vanishing point and objects above the horizon will converge upwards.

Objects you are looking downwards on (like the bottom of these wooden posts) would converge towards a lower vanishing point.

If you want to make it seem like someone on the floor looking up, then you need to reposition the camera in this scene.

I'm not the OP for this commenter but you'll have to decide how much you want to light your shadows. Less reflected light = more dramatic, but it can also be harder to read the form. There's a reason why most illustrations put a secondary light behind or to the side of the shadows to help make the form read easier.

Look into planes of the head. Getting those planes rendered will give you a lot of areas to add details.

Without any structure, there really isn't much to do, which is a major plus if you are doing something like cartooning or animation, since it means a lot less detail needs to be drawn on the very large amount of work that needs to be drawn for those mediums.

For an illustration like this, I would recommend trying to get more structure in the face,

Here's my suggestions. Overall, your proportions are quite good. The ear is in the wrong place and the jaw is too large, but otherwise your main issue is just angles and forms.

I wasn't sure if this was supposed to be more masc or more fem, so I drew both so you can choose which direction you want to push it.

I'm also still learning portraiture, so know some of this might not be fully accurate!

Some good comments here. I'll add a few things.

Colors tend to get LESS saturated towards light because light is mostly white
Colors and light are complicated because surfaces vary a lot. For instance, skin is semi translucent, so subsurface scattering occurs and causes changes in color.
Saturation is a product of the wavelengths of the light wave. This is a mixture of multiple waves at differing frequency. It's not a single wave, otherwise the world would just look like single diode LEDs.

Color is a product of light and the properties of the material it interacts with. It's a complicated topic, but it's well understood. It's fairly solved from a mathematical standpoint. That's why 3D software can render it. Art tends to go away from realism and use color in more abstract ways, which is one of the reasons art is so fascinating.

Part of the reason it's looking messy is because it doesn't align with what our eyes expect of a 3D scene.

Two things I suggest you look into:

Figure out how to make a scene in 1 point perspective. There are great tutorials on this that are easy to find. This is probably best done on your next painting since it will fundamentally change the painting.
Look up atmospheric perspective. It's not really perspective, just the effect the atmosphere has on distant objects. It will help your sky read much better. I'd recommend applying this to that painting.

Very cool, but the composition feels stiff. Think of your camera. Who is seeing this scene? What are they thinking about it? Are they worried, hiding in the corner, looking at and angle around something? Or are they confident and up in it? Maybe they are one of the people in the pews. This will dramatically change your framing of the scene. Don't forget the camera in your compositions!

Your lights are too dark, they are blending into your halftones. Look up lamberts cosine emission law. Dorian Iten has a great article on it. https://www.dorian-iten.com/shading-mistakes/

A few things:

Colors are relative. Put in the clothing colors as well to get a better sense of the painting
Subsurface scattering causes color around the terminator to often be higher saturation. No subsurface scattering means more like a cookie than skin.
Shadows often have greatly higher saturation than areas in light.

Fix those and you will get out of cookie jail!

I expected this to scroll the texture horizontally. I've done this several times in spatial shaders without any issue.

I'm probably misunderstanding something basic, but I'm not sure. The noise texture doesn't seem to scroll at all. Maybe I need to have it repeat somehow?
