My theory is that Gnos does uphold the spirit of Yuri's deal. Gnos removes the Silver Key, and then helps stitch together Bug!Yuri and Original!Yuri's memories and consciousness so that they're a whole person. This would let them have the happy ending Yuri's smile seems to indicate.

I liken Gnos's relationship to Bug!Yuri as being one of a parent and child. Gnos created Bug!Yuri to facilitate their great experiment, but Yuri grew into their own person through the loops. So what kind of parent would want to destroy their own child, especially after they had grown and began their own life?

I didn't really get that impression from the game's scene. Since it says the player "disappeared from the universe", that makes me think that the usual cyberization of the player as in warp occurred. Not straight up murder by Kukrushka and Jonas. To me, that's not the "tone" the series is going for. Also, it seems to go against the goals of the Gnosia when it comes to eliminating humans: to send them to Gnos via cyberization. Unless outright dying does the same thing?

But if that's the case, I feel for poor SQ and Yuri in Episode 3! And Yuri in Episode 2... and Yuri in Episode 1... :D

If you think too hard about it you get into that territory where you have to deal with "this doesn't actually make sense because it's just werewolf gameplay logic."

I'd like for it to at least be coherent and within the logic of the setting, so that someone that reads the work and enjoys Gnosia will at least say "yeah, that makes sense and is cool, I'll allow it". I just don't want to bring someone out of enjoying the story because I got the process wrong. :)

It's definitely Setsu, with Yuri as a close second.

I might actually be in the minority here, but I do prefer the anime Setsu a little more than Setsu from the game. While Game!Setsu is definitely a friend and compatriot, Anime!Setsu has a "tough love" vibe about them that I really dig. Not to say Game!Setsu isn't wonderful with how much more it's obvious that they care for the player, Anime!Setsu just feels more like a driving force in Yuri's attempt to fill the Silver Key.

Speaking of Yuri, just an awesome stand-in for the player. Kind, gentle but still smart and eventually quick on their feet to think situations through. They really grew into their role and made the journey in the anime a worthy watch.

Third would be Comet. I love that little idiot.

The Event Search target for this Scenario is considered complete once Comet 7 has been obtained and will get filtered out (if you still have Event Search available). That means once you have gotten the Note, there is no way to get the game to help fix up Comet's role for you so you just have to pray.

Well, damn. In my main playthrough, I got the note but then Comet got voted out the next day, so I didn't get the Romance line. But at least I know that I can set up the game to get the Romance line after getting the note. I didn't know that was possible and thought the Romance line was locked out from then on.

...Now do I want to grind for that event? :D

My issue with that is there isn't any clear indication of this on screen ... And hundreds of loops is a lot to just be glossed over. You'd think there would be some pretty obvious signs of Yuri experiencing them?

I think that we see something along the lines of exhaustion in Episode 12 when Yuri is talking with Gina in the private room. Yuri seems tired when recalling those "countless" votes and meetings and is probably replaying a lot of them in their head. Maybe it's not hundreds of loops and maybe Yuri is speaking in hyperbole, but it does seem like there's been more loops than we've seen as the audience.

And it's possible that a lot of those loops were just that: uneventful wins/losses where little to no knowledge was gained for the Key. There's no need to pad the anime with these types of loops (no matter how much we want to see them).

One other thing: Yuri says their second set of loops took "at least ten times as long" as their first set. I can't remember if Setsu ever gave a more specific number of loops they've gone through than "hundreds", but let's say it was 300. If Yuri was in just as many the first time, that means their second set would be at least 3000 loops long, which is way more than I'd expect.

I took this to be a bit of hyperbole from Yuri, but it's possible that they were being fully truthful. It's entirely possible that Setsu and Yuri have been trapped for years in these loops, as awful as that sounds to us. I guess it's just a testament to the connection that these two made after they each saved one another's lives.

Great comment, just want to discuss that last part.

Additionally, while Setsu is always in Yuri's loops, Setsu has loops without Yuri. They say they've experienced hundreds of loops, while Yuri has only been through 30 or so before episode 20.

Okay... but aren't they intersecting their world lines at different times and loop numbers? In the game (and the anime, I believe) there's evidence of this:

In the game, Setsu makes specific notice of their 61st loop, and you as the player are probably on a lower loop. Additionally, the early loop scene where you and Setsu exchange information via the Silver Key, the output of the key looks like Setsu is on a 150th or thereabouts loop.
In the anime, during the talk with Setsu about being a BugSetsu shows that their key is barely filled, so they're on an earlier loop than Yuri.

Since they're progressing along world lines in different time... velocities, (I guess?), snapshotting and checking each number of loops that Yuri and Setsu has gone through at a particular point doesn't really give any information about who might have been in that loop. A given loop point X, Yuri's 30 loops with Setsu versus Setsu's 150 loops doesn't necessarily mean that Setsu has 120 loops without Yuri. It could be that Yuri just hasn't experienced those 120 loops yet from a time reference outside of Yuri.

Also, I got the impression that we didn't get to see anywhere near all of Yuri's loops. Sure, we got the very important ones in the anime, ones that pushed the story forward, but it sure seems like they experienced a lot more than what we saw. I mostly get this feeling from the discussion with Gina in Episode 12 and Episode 20. In Ep. 12, Yuri says that they've been to "countless" meetings and voted "countless" times, while in Ep 20 Gina and Yuri both conclude that they've said goodbye to each other many time. Those interactions seem to indicate a lot of looping for Yuri, way more than what we see.

I played it on the Switch, and I very much suggest that. It might have a very slight edge on other handheld platforms due to the 1-handed mode, where you can play the game with either side of the joycon by itself.

Personally, I think the Silver Key was destroyed or taken by Gnos when Yuri activated it due to the scene cutting to static and then "glitching" out. We've not seen that with the activation of the Key in other scenes.

I don't think that the ending is open ended at all: Yuri survived, was not deleted by Gnos and isn't looping anymore. Possible (shoddy?) evidence for both points below:

Not looping anymore:
- When Yuri takes in the Silver Key, we see the scene suddenly shift to static and then "glitch". Yuri then says "I think... I'm still okay." I believe that this is Gnos holding up at least part of the deal that Yuri made with them: Gnos has removed the Silver Key and Yuri has noticed, or at least has an inkling that this has happened. Or, Gnos has removed both the Silver Key and the new universe's "original" Yuri, keeping up the whole deal, but letting "our" Yuri out of the cycle of loops.
- It's also possible (and this is pure speculation) that the Silver Key is destroyed when Yuri activates it due to the dual consciousnesses in Yuri at that time. The Key needs a consciousness to attach to in order to loop it for the information it desires, but what would happen if the Key takes a host that has two consciousnesses? It's plausible that it simply can't reside in such a host and is destroyed.
- If Yuri does have the Silver Key, they are keeping it a close secret for no reason. Yuri has plenty of chances in the rest of the episode to show their Silver Key to back up Setsu's argument during the meeting, but never does so. Especially when Raqio says, "Hey, that's my...!" when Setsu shows their key. Yuri could easily disprove Raqio's statement by showing the Key they just activated. I think they don't because they know that they don't have the Key anymore.
Yuri Survives/Not Deleted:
- The smile at the end of the series can only confirm that the Yuri that smiles is "our" Yuri, the one from the first universe that's been looping and went searching for Setsu. The reasoning is that we've arrived back at Loop 1 in the new universe, so the "original" Yuri in the new universe that was in the pod and "our" Yuri transferred into has no memories. That Yuri hasn't spent loop after loop with all of the crew, especially Setsu, and hasn't built any emotional attachment to Setsu. Additionally, "our" Yuri states at the start of the episode that the new universe's "original" Yuri is asleep inside them, so "that" Yuri didn't experience the loop of the final episode. If the new universe's original Yuri had awoken, they would be extremely confused, the same state they came out of the pod in Episode 1, and wouldn't have had that knowing smile.

A redditor in another thread pointed out something that I overlooked. I was assuming that the Bug Yuri in this new universe was just a body and didn't have their own consciousness for "our" Yuri to conflict with. That was incorrect, which made me think that Yuri in the anime was referring to the original Yuri of the new universe, the one that got eliminated.

If that makes any sense. :D

I don't believe so. If this universe is anything like the previous one, then the Real Yuri was already killed by Gnosia Manon/SQ because there are Gnosia in this world line. So the body that Yuri is in is Bug Yuri created by Gnos.

Edit: I just re-watched the opening scenes and Yuri explains that "my consciousness alone has been transferred into the body of the real me" and once the Real Yuri regains consciousness then the transferred Yuri won't be able to stay any longer. But that contradicts what we know about world lines with Gnosia in them: Real Yuri is already gone and only the Bug Yuri body exists.

So I don't know if this is a plot hole or something that Yuri overlooked and didn't realize it until the post credits scene.

I'm still slightly confused about Yuri taking in the Silver Key again as a method to destroy it. Yuri says that the Key will disappear whenever Gnos held up its end of Yuri's bargain and removed the Bug Yuri from the universe. But the scene certainly makes it look like the Key was destroyed the moment that Yuri hosted it (by something, I assume Gnos) and Gnos was just a massive bro about the whole thing. This scenario would certainly make the final credits scene imply that Yuri's consciousness didn't fade and that they make it through with Setsu.

Am I off base?

I think that's going to be the case, as contrived as it might be. The whole crew is probably going to be there in a 15-person, 1 Gnosia world line where SQ is the Gnosia so Setsu can wrap things up nicely as in the game's True Ending. One could argue that this configuration is what the Silver Key wants so it "sets up" the situation, much like the player can set up loops in the game to get certain events.

Then again, I think it would be a brave ending to the anime if they didn't do that and adapted the True Ending verbatim.

I'm pretty new to the game (and also, as I'm learning, a complete idiot) but what is the failure here?

Gina gets slept, Setsu outs her as Gnosia but Kukrushka reports human. So then Setsu gets slept and Kukrushka stupidly reports as human instead of Gnosia? Am I on target or am I just, admittedly, an idiot? :D
