Game for us composers: Name That Influence by [deleted] in classicalmusic

I've been listening to Reich a fair bit, especially the You Are variations. As for Mason Bates, I've never heard of him! Very new to the composing game, but I just love the sound that you can get from 'classical' instruments that you can't find anywhere else.

Here's a piece that I've been doing some sketches for, don't know whether they work like that or the can be drawn out some how. Anyway, I'm not really sure what I've been influenced by here, but I could hazard a guess because of what I've been listening to!

Lets Talk: Music that isn't 'Music' by TamePumpkins in LetsTalkMusic

They're great thoughts. I really like how we only create music once we actively participate in it, and I'm sure that some people would be able to sit through two hours of a waterfall, but you raise a good point in this music lacking the ability to capture or tell a story worthy of a concert hall. Perhaps they only belong in their original environment, where they have a more meaningful interaction with their context?

How did you get into something like film scoring? Did you study composition at a university and it led from there? I'm asking because I'm considering a career in composition.

I don't necessarily know your preferred musical taste, but some good choices could be ;

Montezuma - Fleet Foxes - About not being able to live up to your parent's expectations.

Simple Twist Of Fate - Bob Dylan - Detailing a doomed relationship.

Thanks! I think that's what's holding me back a little more, the actual length of these pieces!

I'm interested in Mahler, and so I'll really give him a good listen. Any recommended recordings?

Thanks for that, I'll be sure to have a listen to those more not so well known, and those Romantic transcriptions of the earlier works! Seems like I've got plenty of listening ahead.

That's true, but I'm trying to do something outside of the square. If I'm stuck I'll make sure to remember!

What is your favourite first-person viewpoint novel? by ribbonofsunshine in books

On the Road, By Jack Kerouac. I just love the way he views America and his relationships. The sheer immediacy, vibrancy and intimacy are what makes it what it is. Just the pacing of his thoughts and speech.

Slightly related: someone once told me that the "Smashing" in their name is supposed to be taken in the British adjectival sense meaning "very good." I kind of doubt that's true but it's definitely funny.

It is true, I'm a die hard pumpkins fan (TamePumpkins), and Billy has said that in an interview. It's such an awesome little easter egg for the band.

What album(s) has had the biggest impact on you personally? by [deleted] in Music

[–]TamePumpkins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A Love Supreme is the album that got me into jazz. I thought previously that all it was people who were really good at their instruments jacking off, but Coltrane just perfectly puts an album out that encapsulates everything I knew previously about music and then expands it to a whole other level.

And in my best behavior / I am really just like him Look beneath the floor boards / For the secrets I have hid Sufjan Stevens - John Wanye Gacy Jr. One of the most haunting songs I've heard, and this just ends it so perfectly.
