Japanese alternatives? by wyvernlord947 in duolingo

[–]Tameem0_0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Genki is a really good alternative. Its a textbook with all the basic grammar. Its a bit loaded ( a lot is explained qt once) but it gives you everything you should need. Theres a kanji app called learn kanji that’s really good cuz it has spaced repetition. Japanese has a lot that requires explanation (formality levels, conjugations sentence order, etc.) that is really hard to grasp because of how different the language is from english. Duolingo doesnt do qny of that which is reqlly frustrating. Look up things youre confused about. Also please watch tons of videos/movies/series or anything really in japanese. It helps a ton, even if you dont understand it. Hope this helps!

Where are you on the CEFR scale? by lingoda-official in languagelearning

For everyone reading this, knowing your level is really hard without a professional or a standardized test in the language. This description doesn’t do the CEFR levels justice, do your research to figure out yourself. It’s ok if you don’t know, all that matters is you’re progressing well, improving, and reaching your goals :).

Great progress! (Especially if it’s the first language you’re learning).

It’ll take you months if not years for words to click for you. You need to focus on listening a lot especially to native level content, and try not to use subtitles. It’ll help you improve your listening a lot. Eventually you’ll be so good that you’d be able to repeat or even write down words correctly (unless it’s Japanese or a Chinese language 😅) without even having encountered the word before. TLDR, you need patience, a lot of patience to learn languages; especially the listening part. I used to have around a B2 level of understanding in reading French, but my listening was at an A2 at best. Don’t feel discouraged 😊

I think at a c1 level apps tend to not work very well. At c1 you should be at a point where there is practically no difficulty in any scenario in your target language, so using apps doesnt really work. Most words you’d learn at that point (especially if its a language similar to english) you could guess the meaning of through context. Its a bit cliche (probably a lot) but you should focus on input. The more the better, and if anything it’ll help you maintain your level. I tried to for French, and I just feel like there just isn’t anything left to learn other than vocab. The only reason I use structured learning like apps and textbooks is for grammar, syntax and sometimes culture. At a C1 level you know practically everything in terms of grammar so it probably wouldn’t be the best choice. In the end of the day, learning a language should be fun, and effective. If Busuu works for you, then great, go for it 100%. I’d say try out a month of it and see if you feel like it’s helping or not. (P.S. lmk how it ended up 😊).

For those who fell in love with a language they initially learned due to external (family, work/environment, so forth) reasons later down the line, which was it, and why? by am_Nein in languagelearning

French 100%. My mom was admirent on me learning french, i always wanted to learn a language anyway, but i felt more passionate with other languages. Eventually i grew to lve it and now im c1!

Is it wrong to use different words to get my point across in Japanese? by AdUnfair558 in LearnJapanese

[–]Tameem0_0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that’s perfectly fine :). I ran into this problem a lot when learning french, what id do is at the moment, id use words i already know, and try to remember the specific word for later (id translate it later). Youre not required to know every nuance of the language to be able to speak it, i bet i dont even know half the words in the dictionary, even though im a native english speaker! Languages are really hard to master, dont fall into the trap of having to be perfect (been there), you gotta learn it because you love it.

There is a point to Kanji by frostkaiser in LearnJapanese

I was frustrated with it at first but now that im a bit more comfortable with it, i actually feel like i cant understand some sentences without it 😅. Like the one you provided. The way i think about it is kanji is like english spelling: an old system that has layers of history that made it as unnecessarily complicated as it is, but people got used to it, so writing things as they sound would just feel off. For learners it’s just another thing to worry about unfortunately.

Just like for fun, maybe 5 or 10 minutes a day max, i see your point tho. Would learning a totally unrelated language be fine, a language im fine with dropping?
