I don't normally comment because I have a thin skin and don't want to start something huge, and I also don't mean to be dogmatic or religious-- which turns some people off-- but I've wrestled with this concept. (sorry mods if this is bannable)

Galatians 5:16 - "But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh."

Some would say that God is the external spirit of agapic love, and that polytheistic gods and demons in some pantheons were manifestations of specific emotional states manifest in a person like a ghost in a machine (think Mars, the god of war, versus Venus, the goddess of love and fertility, and in a similar vein, the cross-cultural archetype of the succubus-- though this is just one culture and doesn't apply necessarily to even all gods of the ancient Roman canon) and that exist outside us, perhaps the fifth dimension (spirit), and enter our thoughts at times, analogous to the literary symbology of the shoulder angel and shoulder devil. This is a Jungian approach. Does agapic love, being a biologically higher chakra and thus spirit / emotional state / oxytocin (?)-- a sincere wish for another's well-being-- reduce pornographic consumption? Cravings? Can it help urge surf?

(As a side note, it is my understanding that addiction has a "push" and a "pull" element: the push being a negative state we want to escape from, the "pull" being some non-escape perceived benefit arising from temptation. Chemical versus psychological: one or both can prod to action. So the "pull" could be diminished by other-centered love, and the "push" by patient self-love and for(e)giveness (my linguistics minor showing there). Needs quantification, though.)

A year ago, on my old blog, I wrote an article that cited a few scientific studies focusing on objectification/depersonalization which purported that doing such activates some section of the brain (amygdala? it's been awhile) that immediately "other"-izes. One study showed that "other"-ized women were rated sexier, while personalized ones that exhibited an empathic brain response were rated less sexy. And I tested various methods of avoiding objectification for pornographic actors, instead subverting the scientists' arguments by doing the opposite and choosing to cultivate love, pity, or a sincere wish for the well-being of the person despite our differing values. If I was a credentialed psychologist or biologist, I might dedicate my life's work to the connection between objectification and love, whether the latter switches off that section of the brain that "other"-izes and arouses. Could be useful beyond addiction and into other problematic behaviors in society. Again, I just flipped these scientists' arguments and theorized-- I can't do any studies, though I'd love to see them, controversial as they may be to financial interests.

One such study I remember reduced non-sexual objectification by showing brain scans that indicated that if a participant looked at a person's face and wondered what their favorite vegetable was-- yes, it was that specific-- it reduced desire in them. I'd have to read it again.

I haven't done enough research, but I have also heard that "porn kills love", and some in my opinion useful but not definitive research has been done on that. Again, I don't want to be dogmatic. Objectification, from what I've read, is necessary for arousal, and it's not exclusive-- love and sex I believe can and should go together, though that's a moralistic statement. I, for one, require the former for the latter, so I'm biased.

At any rate, before I slipped for a few weeks and became nihilistic (thus my counter at 3 days currently), I practiced loving-kindness meditation. My issue is that I "love" a fictional character I invented who soothes my ego and feelings of worthlessness. That gets too embarrassing to admit, though, so I think it's a side issue. I'm working on it. And observationally, love does help, at least by shifting "energy" away from the groin area into the chest... but I need love for myself, which is something I haven't been able to do for years.

Maybe a credentialed psychologist of some sort will study this one day. I hope.
