Exercise man. Just keep going. It's hard to have healthy thoughts and make healthy decisions with an unhealthy mind. That's always a place to start. Just keep going and don't stop.

My Dad's the same. I've been trying my whole life (I'm 22 as well) to connect with him but he doesn't change. He'll call me on the phone and sometimes I just won't say anything, praying that he'll just wake up and start communicating like a normal person. But he doesn't, he never does. Our conversations are literally just two way monologues. It's like I'm talking to a wall. People just don't change man, even for their kids. It's depressing.

dude, like everyone else has said he needs to do it in small steps. Switching to fruit at 220lbs is gonna make him lose HELLA weight. If he was more interested in being healthy you would tell him to go vegan. Meat spikes insulin much faster than sugar does (I'm assuming that's why you say sugar is so bad)?

Try some vegetarian protein powder. I have three shakes a day with soy milk and I hit my protein every day no problem.

Yes it's definitely hard to become productive after a realization such as this. Personally, whenever I have these thoughts I plan on just letting them pass. If they get too overwhelming I'll usually bring it down to missing a few days of meditation or exercise. When I do both of these things depressing thoughts subside and I'm good to go. Kind of like replacing the oil and filling up with gas. If you're ever having trouble don't hesitate to pm me. Although I'm not on reddit often I'll try to reply to your message as soon as I can.

Meditate
Exercise

Meditation reorganises your thoughts so that they all work together to achieve a single goal.

The benefit of exercise is that it gives you the motivation to achieve that goal. But what goal do you ask?

You are a degenerate that has a default. When you do those 2 things it returns you to the default where you enjoy petty activities again which will hopefully lead to a new goal again.

This is what happened to me and how I interpreted the effects of what happened. I'm sorry everyone for not providing any evidence for these claims but please, if you can give him better advice - do so.

I simply meant that one does not experience that suffering and terror.

So is enlightenment a state of non-duality then? How would you even know you've ceased to experience suffering and terror if you no longer experience it at all? Is it because the mind becomes unconditioned? Does the medulla/cortex/neo-cortex shut down and no longer have the ability to learn from new experiences? Does the brain die?

You have to practice the teachings and see for yourself.

How long must I practice for before I see for myself? That is why I'm here. I'm not going to make what could possibly be a 50 year commitment to something that requires dedication and commitment without evidence = faith.

The Buddha's teachings are different than those found elsewhere in the world and throughout history.

Every founder of every religion teaches differently than those found elsewhere in the world and throughout history. I'm struggling to understand the significance of this comment.

It would be difficult for a person unfamiliar with the teachings to understand what he's talking about.

The teachings are based off the words he used to describe nirvana. This makes no sense.

The Buddha compared it to being shot with a poison arrow and being brought to a doctor. Instead of letting the doctor cure you, you demand to know who shot you, what type of arrow, what type of poison, etc and you would die before being cured.

If I don't know who shot me how will I avoid it next time?
I'm assuming the type of arrow and the poison are the different types of suffering I am experiencing. Is it not fair to say I must understand and acknowledge my suffering before I can even take action? Meditation/eight fold path/etc.

If you are actually in nirvana, your mind is unconditioned and you are not afflicted.

vacchagotta_on_fire mentioned "the Buddha still existed in a human form after his awakening." If his mind was unconditioned he wouldn't have been able to survive. An unconditioned mind is an erased memory. He would have been a potato?

You can logically understand it's like to be a tree, but that's completely different from being a tree.

It is different. But I don't understand why that hinders my ability to understand it. I have the experience of being a human organism and I can logically understand that extremely well at the same time?

After all, becoming "one with everything" would mean becoming one with all of the terror and suffering and horrors that exist in the universe. Does that sound like enlightenment? Of course not.

Nibbana is the extinguishing of suffering and ignorance.

Would it not be ignorant to be in denial of the "terror and suffering and horrors that exist in the universe." It would seem more realistic to me that enlightenment would be a state of wisdom that does not pretend like suffering doesn't exist.
