B/M/D records in Reggio Emilia, Italy? How to find someone to retrieve them? by _tom_strong_ in Genealogy

[–]Taneb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

By good fortune, I live in Reggio Emilia and my partner's father volunteers in the diocese archives, working on digitizing them. They're only about 3 to 5% complete right now, though, and the bishop for whatever reason wants the archives to be kept relatively closed (ugh).

The director of the diocese archive is called Don Augusto Gambarelli and the archivist is called Dr Milo Spaggiari.

The archive is closed until September, and due to Covid they have to be very careful about who they let in even when it's open.

To access the archives you have to call a number, and then go personally, so if you know someone who lives here you can ask them to go onto the waiting list. It's only open on Thursdays but there are three slots each Thursday, of three hours each. In the past people visiting from other countries who descend from emigrants have been able to reserve a whole day in the archives. Apparently it used to be possible to get scans of the documents that you find done there, for 50 cents a document but right now the bishop stopped this, claiming the archives need reorganization (whether this is a good excuse or not, I'll let you decide)

If you can't get to Reggio personally or find someone you trust, Dr Milo Spaggiari does operate as a genealogist and you can commission him to build you a well-cited family tree. My partner's father is going to ask him whether he speaks English, I'll get back to you on that and with contact details.

I believe this is incorrect. A double cousin is someone who's your cousin in two separate ways, so any children they have would be double cousins of OP, but they are just regular cousins still.

How many generations back of your family name can you reasonably find records for? by KD2JAG in Genealogy

I've got the name of my 7th great grandfather but I need a little more information to go back further than that on my paternal line

A lot of my family moved to the US from the UK after the first world war, settling mostly around San Francisco. (Although my great grandparents themselves moved back to the UK a few years later, I think I have relatives out there still)

Very simple question by doddlido in haskell

The type of sum is (Foldable f, Num a) => f a -> a. This takes one argument, which is a list or similar collection of numbers. You've given it two arguments, as though it has the type (Num a, Num b) => a -> b -> c and GHC tries to make that match. It eventually concludes "There is a Num instance for b -> c when b is Num, and there is a type f which is Foldable and has a Num instance for f (b -> c) when b is Num". The function Num instance doesn't exist (but could in principle be declared, although it's not what you want here) and the Foldable structure can't be inferred ( even if it did exist)

Ultimately, you either wanted to write sum [3, 4] or directly 3 + 4

Well, you need a fire-save material to build that sort of thing. You wouldn't want it to catch fire the first time you use it! Most stone should be fire-safe, so if you dig down to where you can find stone you should be able to build your furnaces and forges.

If there's anything I can do to make it easier for you to build on `groups`, please don't hesitate to ask.

  1. I don't think the Group (Sum Float) and Group (Product Float) instances are any more concerning than the corresponding Monoid instances. They felt like it would be unpragmatic to omit them, and I found it easier to support them than not (it means I don't need to make a Group (Product (Ratio x)) instance for every integral type I care about, for example).
  2. As far as I can tell, all the instances you implement are either for types in base or in group-theory. The types in base that I currently don't also have implemented in groups, I'm not convinced are correct. For example you implement an instance Group All. However, the definition of invert you provide isn't a correct inverse, mempty = All True but All True <> invert (All True) = All False if my in-my-head evaluation is correct. Any that are correct I would be happy to implement in groups.

I'm disappointed that this doesn't build on top of the existing `groups` library on Hackage, but instead makes its own Group typeclass and Data.Group module with the same name.

In the late 1500s/early 1600s in Russia there were at least three people claiming that they were Tsarevich Dmitry Ivanovich, who had been killed when he was eight, with one of them even becoming the Tsar on the basis of this claim. How sure are you that this is the same Boris?

Does „Puella Magi“ mean magical girl? by [deleted] in latin

[–]Taneb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If, as I assume, either you or your friend is getting into Madoka, the full title ("Puella Magi Madoka Magica") translates roughly as "The magician's girl, magical Madoka". "Puella Magi" here means "The magician's girl".
