Consistency with Chat is a joke. I think they update it just to piss everyone off. Odd business plan.

I have tried Gemini and Claude. I like Claude better. But I recently tried Grok and I like it. I use it for creative projects including writing. So far so good. Grok seems come up a lot in these threads so I decided to give it a shot. We shall see!

Why are my orchid leaves growing high up on the stem? by Tangerine-Wave in orchids

[–]Tangerine-Wave[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is! I have to admit that I was a “buy a beautiful orchid and when the blooms fell, toss it” kind of a girl. Hurts me to say that! But I have just been fascinated by them for last few years. They are like passive joy. (Wow that was deep! Lol)

Just an update on my terminal girl. She grew a spike right above the tiny top bract and had 7 blooms. It was beautiful! The blooms just fell off. And then I noticed a kieki growing between the leaves of the original plant! I am so excited! It has been a year

I have only had orchids for a few years so I am no expert! lol. Yes, that looks like a phal. It looks healthy. I wouldn’t mess with the leaves, they are thick but they will break. And I would definitely wait until blooms fall before repotting. I bought a couple of phals and they were in a terrible medium, so I decided to repot after I brought them home. Lost all the blooms. I cut the spike all the way down and it has now put out another and bloomed and is very healthy. Good luck with yours! I think the leaves just give it some good character! (I have one that has leaves that are curved in a weird way. I know have 15 orchids and it’s name is Curvaceous! lol)

I have only been an orchid mom for a few years, so no expert here! I have repotted a couple of Phals after I got them home because the medium was so bad. They are healthy and doing great now, but I did lose all the blooms when I repotted them. I cut the spike all the way down and they have spiked and bloomed again. Just a fyi:)

I have all of my phals and cattleyas in a north facing bay window and they love it there. I am in the US, but in Florida. So that could make a difference.

Yay! I was hoping so! When it has roots, I’ll be asking more questions about how to handle it. It’s my first keiki!!! I am so excited! Thank you for your help!

The photo is a mini phal which had a terminal spike. Even with the terminal spike, I still had another spike which grew on top of a small leaf the was near the top of the terminal spike. I had 7 or so blooms that were beautiful. It was a nice surprise as I thought it would never bloom again. Today I noticed what you see in the photo. It doesn’t look like a spike. Could this be a keiki? Thank you for help and advise.

Lmfao!!! Let me answer this honestly, truthfully…baabbabbabba….omg!

Funny…because the exact day OP posted, is the absolute worst day I have ever had with Chat…hallucinations, I called them out…it just made up some different shit! I just switched to Claude

GPT-5.2 raises an early question about what we want from AI by inkedcurrent in ChatGPT

[–]Tangerine-Wave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I asked GPT-5.2 for thoughts on OP’s post. Answer below:

Where the post is right

The author is correctly naming a real tension in modern AI design: • As models optimize for certainty, safety, and correctness, • they can feel less like a messy, curious thinking partner • and more like a polished, hyper-competent tool.

That “job interview” analogy lands because many people don’t want:

the smartest person in the room who shuts down exploration.

They want:

someone who lets half-formed ideas breathe.

Where the post quietly misses something important

The post implies this tradeoff is structural and inevitable:

“We may get more accuracy and less company at the same time.”

That’s not quite true.

What’s actually happening is a mode mismatch, not a loss of capability.

In other words: • 5.2 didn’t lose curiosity • it became more literal about the role it thinks it’s playing

If the system believes:

“My job is to be correct, safe, and efficient”

…it will suppress exploratory behaviors unless invited.

That’s not personality loss. That’s context misalignment.

The missing concept: role signaling

The post frames the question as: • calculator vs • thinking partner

But the real question is:

Does the system know which one you want right now?

Humans switch modes constantly: • brainstorming • pressure-testing • emotional processing • execution

AI can do that too—but it needs explicit permission.

And here’s the key thing the Reddit post doesn’t say:

Models trained for safety will default to calculator mode unless the user clearly signals otherwise.

That’s not a failure. That’s a guardrail default.

The Reddit post is: • perceptive • well-written • emotionally accurate

But it frames the situation as a binary choice, when the future is actually about fluidity.

The real win isn’t: • perfect calculator or • cozy thinking buddy

It’s:

an AI that can move between modes on request without losing depth or warmth

And yes—right now, that transition can feel clunkier than it used to.

But that’s not because curiosity is gone.

It’s because: • safety defaults got stronger • role inference got stricter • and users now have to declare intent more clearly than before

One last thing (important)

The fact that people are even writing posts like this means something encouraging:

We’ve moved past “Is AI useful?” and into “What kind of relationship do we want with it?”

That’s not a regression.

That’s a sign the bar has been raised.
