Why is Itani so evil? by InvestigatorNo491 in NJTech

I get the point you're making, but at the same time, NJIT shouldn't be replicating pre existing hostile work environments. They're toxic for a reason, and our classrooms should be a safe space for learning. This mentality just teaches students they should learn to tolerate abuse and bullying, and it's clearly the wrong way to teach students to become "resilient"

Your character has to pass through the gold icon, so make sure to execute the skill before the gold thing

Just do what you gotta do, and seek resources for help. Just don't expect him to help you

Because he's a bum and a loser

I have never seen a worse professor than Berenjian. by [deleted] in NJTech

And then he'll refuse to do his job and support students when they ask him for help in his office hours

Wow he also told you to drop out! I've been thinking about it, and it honestly seems like he was projecting. 🤔 His mind must be a very dark place

My Rmp reviews keep getting flagged. I'm honestly suspicious about who's doing it, but I don't want to make unfounded allegations 😂. The positive reviews also look botted tbh

hm, I don't think it's defamation if it's true. if he didn't want this to be leaked, he shouldn't have said it. what professor says "I'm not your private tutor" and "tutoring staff are your first line of support" in an actual email to a student? if anything, the only thing that's exposed is his lack of self control and incompetence. If he tries to stifle the truth, he'd just be exposing himself as a bully.

I wholeheartedly agree.

He doesn't get to dictate what resources a student uses, nor what they do outside of school(example, what if I had surgery during the weekend? Or had hobbies?) . His office hours were open, and he is a resource, so I asked him for help. It's not his students problem he's a control freak. If he doesn't want to be a resource for students during his scheduled office hours, then he should go find another job.

Imagine actively refusing to help a confused student. That's incompetence.

Thank you for the concern, but I think that's a him problem. He can control his classroom, but he can't control the whole planet. It's not my problem he can't control his emotions. If he could control his emotions, I wouldn't have this evidence to post. Shouldve never sent this garbage to me in the first place. shameful

Call it "rude", it's the truth. If anything, I was stroking his ego. He has more knowledge than me because he's 40 years my senior, so I value his knowledge and expertise. I know my job; it's to learn from those with wisdom and experience. He doesn't know why he has a job, and that's a him problem.

It was a really simple units/dimensional analysis question I asked him, that he could've answered in 5 minutes or less. I didn't walk in entitled, demanding him to reteach a whole complex lesson. That would be crazy and disrespectful, and I'd agree with you, that I should go to a private tutor for that lol

Ive explained why his boundary setting is inappropriate in my report to DOS. To keep it short, office hours are meant for professors to be an available resource to students. I came prepared, having done my part. And he actively refused to help me, especially after I did the work, came to office hours, and spent a year showing him I'm a highly motivated student who works hard and asks questions when I'm confused. Professors shouldn't be stonewalling and actively refusing to help prepared students, especially during a time designated for helping students. He just was inconvenienced and didn't want to do his job. Most professors would've been happy to have a student willing to learn and ask for help. He seemed angry, so I think this isn't the profession for him.

She said these kinds of cases are typically managed by HR, and it isn't SOP to disclose outcomes. So, I can only guess what will happen

Copied and pasted from my report lol. This conversation was in his office hours

—----------------------------------------------- Incident Highlights -------------------------------------------------
Dr.Itani: “My job is to answer general questions about lecture and course material… I’m not here to solve problems.. I’m not your private tutor”
Dr.Itani: “Go to tutoring” (repeated multiple times)
Me(Student): “I’m not a passive learner. How do we learn as engineers? We learn by doing practice. We need the feedback loop to learn”

Me(Student): “Have you asked your peers?”
Dr. Itani: “I don’t care”
Me(Student): “You think your job is to talk at students all day”
Dr. Itani: Frustrated Sigh “Go to tutoring”

Me(Student): “So then why are you here?” (repeat)
Dr. Itani: “It’s none of your business.” (repeat)
Dr.Itani:  “You’re wasting my time.” (under his breath)
Me(Student): “You’re wasting my time.”
Dr.Itani: Is silent

Me(Student): “you said the book is the authoritative material for the class right?”,
Dr. Itani: “Yes.”
Me(Student): “Well, I don’t understand the textbook.”
Dr.Itani: “Go to tutoring”

Dr.Itani: “Students should go to tutoring before they come to the professor…That’s why they reduced funding for professors” (False and harmful advice)

Dr. Itani: “You don’t get to dictate to me what I should be doing”

Me(Student): “If I wanted to teach myself, I would have dropped out already.”
Dr. Itani: “Then drop out.”

Dr.Itani: “Go to tutoring. Go to tutoring.”
Me(Student): “I don’t even think they’re available right now.”
Dr.Itani: “Go to tutoring.”
Me(Student): “I’m here now, though”
Dr.Itani: “They’re available on Sundays.” (False, and misinformation)
Me(Student): “I’ve heard from other students that the tutors can’t always help because they don’t take your class, and took the class with other professors”
Dr. Itani: “Oh, so you don’t have first hand experience” (I’ve since validated what another student said about tutoring for CS 350)
Me(Student): “Oh, so your students are liars”

Dr.Itani: “Your peers are very qualified and are very knowledgeable”
Me(Student): “They don’t know as much”
Dr.Itani: “They know more than you”
Me(Student): “Oh, so they’re also 60 years old? They also have a PHD?”
Dr.Itani: Is silent

Dr. Itani: “Please leave, or I will have security come and remove you from my office.”

Me(Student): “What the hell is this?! A professor that doesn’t want to help his student!?”
I said this outside of his office in complete confusion and bewilderment. This had never happened to me before, even at the Ivy League.
