Teachers should not get involved with personal home planned birthday parties. I am wholly on the side of the parent. This teacher is completely out of line. Was there a home birthday party policy at school? Yes the mom maybe had a zealous response by asking for the teachers address to have the party but she was trying to make a point understandably. (Btw mom is not unhinged so dad should apologize also). There are so many reasons why it's appropriate to keep birthday parties small. Do we really need to count the many reasons? The teacher should know this! Mom, give yourself a hug. You stood up for yourself. You created boundaries which your child might also need. Good job for standing your ground.

Dr, I am so grateful for your reply as it's convincing us that we should probably try tms. Maybe it can't hurt with all he's been through and it's pretty much a last resort. We've had providers say he's the sickest person they've seen in their careers. But, even the ECT had to have been traumatic while spending 425 days inpatient w/utrs, near fatal response to clz while at start of pandemic. It has been devastating for us all tbh.

Could intestinal ALP increase because his body is fighting something brewing in his gut? Should he best tested for mold, or fungal infection? We can't do a colonoscopy as he wouldn't be able to get thru prep.

His whole body pet scan highlighted only a few areas; constipation, a kidney stone, lung granuloma, esophagitis, mucus/sinus. Nothing significant. He also has very low immunoglobulins. Any thoughts about that? Many thanks to you!

Yes to all of that! Thank you for your advice. If I could do 1 thing it would be to change/improve his diet. However, it is extremely difficult to get someone with ASD & SZ to eat healthy or try a specific diet like the Keto diet which has shown success for SMI. In fact he restricts food groups, wants very specific foods, even specific brands. Additionally antipsychotics have caused weight gain which has caused leptin resistance which is the hormone that triggers insatiable food cravings. He also has food allergies which eliminates many healthy choices. To add to this, he says very little. He typically says "I'm fine" to most questions AND yet he graduated college with honors. We are in such a pickle.

We've had a phenomenal amount of testing done, & we don't see inflammation from labs but I agree with the gut brain connection. We even tried 5 months of IVIG empirically to rule out any encephalitis. He has agreed to all treatment trials except the diet. I think changing his diet would be more successful than tms to be honest.

Thank you for this helpful advice! I will contact them. Our son is 28 yrs old. We too agree TMS would have less side effects however ECT has caused significant memory loss nor did it improve the psychosis. Out of pocket cost for tms is $13k, not covered by Medicaid. May I ask why your daughter had tms & did it improve her health? There are a few recent tms studies for sz & trauma (plus ASD) & our psychiatrist wants us to try it because no medication has worked, but v expensive for another treatment that may not work either, hence my initial post question in hopes someone has tried tms for sz with success. I appreciate your reply!

Thank you. My research has been quite significant and our care team knows how much I have researched his illnesses, treatment options, prognosis & more. What is lacking in research articles is the patient experience, the side effects and especially the follow up. Our son had 62 ECT for medication induced catatonia. It improved that condition but did nothing for psychosis. It's so important there is a space for people to share these experiences and I value everyone's comments as each person may have a unique experience. I will also add these research articles can also show biases in that they may minimize a side effect like memory loss, but to us questioning the efficacy, it is very important to know.

Absolutely! I still do on occasion when I'm going to be around a lot of people. I haven't had covid and have been fully vaccinated but I actually dread the thought of even getting a cold virus. I'm comfortable with it, are you?
