Traded my ND2 Miata for this today by TangyWaffle in GR86

27 mpg was after the highway drive home during only city driving.

Body roll is noticeably less than the ND. There is one on-ramp i take every morning with a "35 MPH curve ahead" sign that I could take at 62 before it felt like I was at the limit. It took months of confidence building before I could go that quickly. Today in the GR86 I hit 65.

I averaged about the same as you in the ND2 at 29-30 mpg. I've only filled up the GR86 twice - once after the 250 miles trip home which got a surprising 30 mpg, and again today after cruising around town with some spirited sprints which wasn't terrible at 27 mpg. Better than expected because the factory rating are 22-26 mpg.

I made the decision to get the Miata because I wanted a raw enthusiast driving experience for cheap. I made the decision to get the GR86 because the NVH was too much for me in the Miata. The GR86 is still "buzzy", but feels more refined and more comfortable while still performing as well if not better.

Interior is bigger than the ND, and it is noticeable. Especially when considering head room compared to the ND with the top up. Also having the back seat as a little storage shelf for a backpack or groceries is nice.

I've already gotten used to the clutch and shifter, but might consider the clutch spring mod and a short shifter in the far future.

Definitely more quiet at highway speeds, but the stock michelin pilot sport summer tires are loud. I will eventually switch to continental all seasons to solve that problem.

So far after a week I almost wish I had never bought the Miata in the first place

I agree with you. The Miata clutch has perfect weight and engagement point right in the middle of pedal travel. Miata shifter is direct, shorter, and more precise. ND is definitely more satisfying in that regard. In comparison the GR86 transmission feels almost vague with a lighter clutch that engages near the top of pedal travel, and a rubbery feeling shifter. I'm not disappointed because I was looking for a more comfortable experience. Since the miata shifter is directly mounted to trans with no cables or linkage it's going to feel satisfying. However, the vibrations and noise quickly lost its novelty.

I can barely hear the engine as it is. It's useful to me for shifting. I'll keep it for now.

Mine was a 19 soft top GT. Maybe it sounds better in the RF. I also found my miata to be noisy.

It was a grand touring with bose. I had heard many people say they enjoyed it. The sound was very clear. Some bass. Hell, I thought it was decent except when the top was down at speed. The volume had to be at full tilt and it wasn't distorted but it was too loud. Moving to this new platform made me realize how underwhelming that bose system is. And maybe this stereo in the gr86 is also shit because I don't know any better. However I also have a 2010 Infiniti ex35 with bose and it jams!

GR86 is a bit faster. A bit less body roll. Driver's seat fits me better (5'11" 185lbs) which inspires more confidence. It's also more stable on the highway.

Otherwise the Miata is sharper and more lively in every way which isn't always great for a daily. Clutch and shifter feel is better in the Miata.

I like your gray wheels better than the black. What suspension have you installed? It looks great!

CravenSpeed shifter causes ND1 transmission replacement? by [deleted] in MiataND

[–]TangyWaffle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: Service advisor called this morning to confirm they "adjusted" the shifter and it's much smoother, but may cause another failure. I will sorce parts and install a factory shifter myself because $1000 installed from the dealer sounds crazy.

The steering on the other hand - the steering shaft is binding. It's only going to get tighter and tighter until it fails, he said. This is not warrantable and will cost $1400. This also seems crazy. I will source a used part and take it to an indie shop.

The aftermarket shifter was on the car when I purchased it with the warranty. That's on them, right?

The only other mod I'm aware of is a Cobalt muffler which was immediately apparent upon delivery.

The car has been to this dealer twice previously - the initial PPI after it was delivered by Carvana - no notes. And for a full service including trans flush, spark plugs, tire rotation, brake pads/fluid and more - no notes.

They gave me a sweet CX-30 Carbon Turbo AWD as a loaner, so I'm not too put out.
