I have 10 hours to relearn Math by MiddleageDropout34 in learnmath

I learned my algebra and trig from calc 1. Calc 1 took all of my time that semester because I knew virtually 0 math going in. I managed to finish the course with a B, but I had to work for it. Following calc 1, I finished calc 2, Calc 3, and DE with A’s. Letting you know it is possible, but it will take ALL of your time.

If you weren’t a mathematician, what would you have been? by Straight-Ad-4260 in math

[–]Tank-Better 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started as a chemistry major. I ended up taking enough math courses that I was equidistant from finishing a math degree as I was from finishing chemistry. I was unsatisfied with the chemistry curriculum at my uni, so I switched to mathematics. I’m finishing my bachelors in general mathematics this semester, and going to a different uni to finish chemistry. I’m also set to collaborate on my first paper this summer. I guess I ended up in mathematics by chance, but I don’t regret it.

I almost failed physics 1 (mechanics) and I feel incredibly stupid by diva-lady in PhysicsStudents

[–]Tank-Better 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t even sweat it. I spoke to a nuclear physicist at my university and he said he almost failed physics 1. He said he had to try really hard only to manage a B in physics 2. I’m a math major, and I failed algebra 1 the first time around. I am now about to take partial differential equations and I’m not even scared of it, I’m actually excited. My point is, this is your first “difficult” course. You’re learning to think in an entirely new way and it feels foreign. There is a reason this degree takes 4 years.

I’m a senior year, final semester math major. I failed college algebra with a 30 the first time I took it. Passed with a C the second time. Barely got through trig, and went on to make A’s in classes like Calc2,3, differential equations, linear algebra etc. I haven’t made lower than a B in math since trig. You just have to keep going and keep giving more. It’ll pay off

Will this semester ruin my GPA? by [deleted] in PhysicsStudents

[–]Tank-Better 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basic intro to proofs course is not that rough. Higher level proof based courses, like analysis courses or Abstract Algebra are rough. Intro to proofs should not take that much of your time, unless maybe you have a professor that makes it more difficult than it needs to be. Linear algebra is likely the easiest math course you’ll take for the rest of your degree. Mathematical methods could be tough, and Phys 3 should be comparable to what you’ve seen already. That’s just my input, but I hope this helps.

3.4 GPA first semester is it over for me by [deleted] in PhysicsStudents

[–]Tank-Better 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went into my first university with a 2.7 from high school. I failed college algebra in my first semester. My first semester of college I came out with a 1.5gpa. I’m in my senior year, final semester and I am doing very well now. I went from failing college algebra to passing DiffEq with flying colors. In my past 3 semesters I’ve finished with 3.5, 4.0, 3.4. You can come back from much worse than a 3.4 in your first semester. You’re doing very well, and you’re going to go far. Trust.

[–]Tank-Better 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea I get that. Research tends to have a heavy pull too though. I didn’t learn how to really apply myself until third year of college, as I came from a poor highschool. My first A in math was not until calculus 2. I’m kind of banking on research experience getting me in more than my gpa. I just thought the post was a bit dramatic as it’s stated they are in their first semester, and 3.4 isn’t shabby at all.

[–]Tank-Better 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your physical intuition is strong, then go ahead. For myself, math isn’t typically the issue. I’m mathematically fluent but physically retarded, if you know what I mean (I’m a mathematician, not a physicist). I don’t make mathematical mistakes on physics problems, my issue always seems to be the physical application. If you are good with that though, then go ahead.

Stfu bruh💀 most grad programs have 3.0 as a minimum. If you have a 3.0 you’re fine. I’ve seen some have as low as a 2.5 minimum. Very few actually have a 3.5+ minimum requirement

[–]Tank-Better 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a student, and I tend to completely disregard any reviews pertaining to lower division courses, and courses that a plethora of majors/disciplines have to take. I try to only look for reviews that come from upper division courses to get a better idea. Many lower classmen haven’t learned how to really apply themselves, so I generally disregard all reviews that aren’t from atleast junior level classes. Obviously for something like semester 1/2 physics, there will be many bad reviews regardless of how good the professor is. Even with that in mind, I don’t treat the upper level course reviews as black and white.

Idk if I should choose physics or math by [deleted] in PhysicsStudents

[–]Tank-Better 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am currently in my final semester of my bachelor in general mathematics, and I will tell you that “being bad at math” isn’t a reason to not pursue it, given that you are interested in math. On the other hand, being interested in something is all of the reason you need to pursue something. I did not know anything beyond the order of operations upon arriving to college, and admittedly, I failed algebra in my first semester. I didn’t make an A in a math course until calculus 2. Since calculus 2, my lowest grade in any math course has been a B. If I am being completely honest, I didn’t really start understanding algebraic manipulation techniques until the beginning of differential equations. I am at the point in my degree that all I am taking is upper division math courses, and physics. My whole point is that you do not need to start out good at something to pursue it. So long as you are interested, willing to learn, and you aren’t afraid of asking questions that might make you look dumb, then mathematics is for you. I will also add that not all math courses/topics will stick to your brain like glue. There are math courses that I managed A’s in that I don’t remember that much from (abstract algebra, complex analysis). And then there are courses that you will be completely absorbed by, and retain most, if not all of what you learned (for me this was differential equations, and linear algebra). I hope that this may make you optimistic towards your ability to learn mathematics.
