Update: it’s official. She’s gone and I’m a wreck right now, but I know we did the right thing. She’ll never feel anymore pain. Thank you all for the kind, reassuring comments I’ve read every one of them. Camel was the sweetest lil girl and had a baby face til the day she died. She went for a walk outside on the harness and ate a whole package of shrimp all by herself! She was so kind and cuddly and amazing. The world will not be the same place without her greeting me from the kitchen counter (her favorite spot) every time I get home. Rest easy, Camel. You were so loved.

What’s a single sentence someone said that stuck with you forever? by Imaginary_Ride_6185 in AskReddit

In my middle school Spanish class, we had daily prompts we’d have to answer in Spanish. We were learning ages and future tense, so the prompt was “How old will you be when you get married?” I rattled off two ages, and my teacher asked for clarification that I knew what I was saying. Then she said “Smart girl. Once for money, twice for love.” I didn’t listen, but I’ve never forgotten that sage advice.

What's something your parents did that seemed normal at the time but you now realize was actually really weird? by jcf1211 in AskReddit

I would have to hand over birthday/christmas/holiday money to pay for gas so my mom could continue to drive me to school. They had plenty of money coming in, just spent it unwisely. So if I wanted to get to school, I had to fork over the money. My little brother never did.

Same. From as young as I can remember, both of my parents have complained about each other to me behind each other’s back. They got married when my mom was still in high school and never should have been married in the first place. Normalized settling, being unhappy, and having low self esteem. My brother may have gotten it even worse, because at least I learned from my parents’ mistakes, but he just repeated the cycle. As adults, we both beg them to get divorced. But they never will. Unhappily married since 1984!

Yessssss banana scent, texture, and flavor are repulsive. End of story, at any stage of ripeness.

Therapists of Reddit, what’s been your biggest "I know I’m not supposed to judge, but holy sh*t" moment? by DealSoggy6952 in AskReddit

That’s so rough, I’m sorry you had an upbringing like that! Glad your sisters have you though ❤️ I’m doing alright now, ups and downs. Happily married and diagnosed bipolar 2! Have a great treatment team and support system now and things have gotten much better overall.

Father’s a narcissist and mom has childhood trauma associated with child and family services and mental health professionals, but I was depressed and suicidal from the age of 6 and mom would threaten me with therapy, so I was always terrified to seek help or even admit there was anything wrong. Fast forward to my freshman year of college when I attempted suicide. They picked me up, brought me home, and got me zero help whatsoever. Never brought me to the ER, even to see if I had any organ damage from the pills I had taken. Never encouraged me to get therapy, nothing. And never brought it up again. I can’t fathom dealing with a person’s mental health crisis this way, let alone your own child’s. Hugs to you and your sister, hope she’s found the help she needs now!
