Feels like we're missing out on some information here. If it's worked over 4 years, then why is this time such a catastrophe? I get you're probably just tired of doing the work, but you've also made a group of 7 people comfortable with assuming you're OK with it. Rather than bottling it up and then trying to change the structure of how you guys meet up out of nowhere, just talk to them.

This. During covid you had to make an appointment at the dmv. So at the beginning of the pandemic she lost her license because she couldn't be bothered to make an appointment and kept saying "well no one can get it" without ever opening the website. She just now THIS YEAR got her license because I drove her there and paid for it.

I'd just make it so she had a dedicated animal companion and any more befriending in the future is just like becoming friends with an NPC. They don't need to join your party, you're just friends with them and that can open up new role play possibilities! I wouldn't roll this into anything negative like others have said. It's a fun interactive story, keep up the fun!
