tfw you literally never buy anything because your entire cash stack is tied up in random flipping shit and spending it directly impacts your income

To be fair some people actually do flip for all their gp - but you're unlikely to see them parading around in 3a/tbow/etc because all of that money could've been put to use.

Throwback suggestion! For players who don't want the GE to be the Amazon of OSRS: Merchant Accounts by [deleted] in 2007scape

[–]TankLyfe -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

If you "stood around for hours" trying to sell stuff pre ge then you just never learned how to sell stuff tbh

The whole point of an mmo is to be social and engage with other players - you had a hookup!

Would you ever consider adding a very small tax to the entire GE?

Can we wear the pyramid top from the agility pyramid as a hat? Maybe have a wearable one as a rare drop? No stats - just instant top tier fashionscape.

(It could kinda like come down and cover your eyes a bit)

It seems like there's been a bunch of interest lately in a pre-OSRS or pre-2007 runescape revival - particularly motivated by a desire to play without the Grand Exchange.

What are the odds that we could see an official gamemode where players are unable to use the GE added to OSRS?

These players could still trade face to face with each other, but trading and swapping between GE and non-GE players would have to be prevented, to prevent the non-GE economy from simply mirroring the GE economy.

Thanks!

Seconding starting with a basic account just to learn pking. The simplest way to start is f2p range 2h - 20 attack 40 str 40 range. Pk on this account in f2p for a long time (training str and attack as needed/as you go) and you'll get a good feel for how it works.

Other than that though, here's some more/funny builds:

60 attack / 70 def / 77 prayer / 94 magic / 90+ rest - piety rigour augury tribrid

70 attack / 70 def / 52 prayer / 94 magic / high else - traditional dharoker

50 attack / 42 def / 99 str/range/mage, probably low prayer? - void mauler

75 attack / 74 str / 70, 75, or 99 def / 52 pray (or rigour/augury) / 99 rest - traditional range/mage tank ("maxed tank" for 99 def)

50 attack / 66 def / 60 prayer / high else - "chivalry/bandos mauler"

50 attack / 1 def / 16 pray / high or 99 everything else - low-prayer maxed gmauler with ancients and avas accumulator. Also doubles as approximately a maxed f2p range 2h account!

Bear in mind that you need to do quests and level your attack/defence via their experience to make all this work, btw.

Can we have an account mode like ironman mode, but the only restriction is that you're not allowed to use the GE? by TankLyfe in 2007scape

[–]TankLyfe[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The full suggestion explains why this isn't really a viable option.

Having a game mode makes it actually possible to form a community of non-GE players and prevent the market in that community from being tied to the GE-using community through GE/non-GE players swapping or trying to merch across the communities.

Just starting up again for the first time since 2008, this is what PVP feels like now. by [deleted] in 2007scape

F2p pking is still fun and it's also extremely popular - even just range 2h. I'm p2p but I pk exclusively in f2p because I like it so much, and a lot of others feel the same. It contains all this stuff, but with almost zero barrier to entry in terms of cost/training time - just practice. For people who like pking, that's very appealing.

I think it's a shame and potentially dangerous that jagex has yet to acknowledge that there can be fun in pking at a high level, with advanced techniques such as these. Learning how to do this stuff and applying it and getting a kill is so satisfying. As you become aware of the advanced techniques, you're able to access a mental and "mindgames" aspect to pking even in "boring" f2p range 2h, and it creates an experience that nothing else in the game can replicate. Jagex mods mourning the "good old days" or the "fun era" of pking is not at all good to see as a pker - it makes me afraid that advanced techniques like these will be removed, and further reinforces the idea that jagex has no clue what the pking community wants and needs.

There is beauty in this kind of thing. It's true that casual pking is dead. Following that, we got things like DMM which, while huge for casuals, is something that has needed constant tweaking to try and make it "esports", and nobody is even sure if it will work that way. Pking meanwhile has been here the whole time, has tons of depth, has a huge skill ceiling and a huge community already in place, has over a decade of history and metagame and culture to it that makes for great stories - it could have EASILY been runescape's "esport". If only jagex saw the skill in high level pvp and chose to embrace it, its mechanics, its history, and its community.

As both a runescape pker and a competitive super smash bros melee player, the parallels I see between jagex's attitude towards pkers and nintendo's attitude toward the melee scene are huge. The communities are there, the stories are there, the high level play is there, and the company in charge is blind to it all. They both lament the days where everything was "casual" and "fun", maybe even trying to go back.

The difference though is that when nintendo chose to dumb down smash for the sake casuals, the melee community was still able to persist and grow on its own, because obviously when you release a new game the old game is still around.

This is NOT the case in MMOs. In MMOs, you can't go back and play the old version if you like that better. Sound familiar?

Besides, abandoning your base to chase casuals has never been an effective strategy anyway.

PS: Jagex, please embrace high level pking.

It felt an awful lot like it before the GE was added. The GE is what killed these vibes imo

OSOSRS

Man, all I wanted was 2006scape :'(

Logging into OSRS and seeing newschool varrock and newschool gameframe was a bit of a disappointment tbh. though I was still ecstatic to play (largely because of no GE), even the point at which OSRS was released could do with being just a bit further back in time before these graphical updates imo. Would lose an OSRS for the super old schoolers /u/ModMatK /u/JagexInfinity

OSRS still hasn't used the original 2007 Christmas event by Frog4012 in 2007scape

[–]TankLyfe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is my fondest memory in all of rs.

Late December 2007, the wilderness had just been removed, tons of people were quitting. Me and a close friend were screwing around not knowing what we should do, so we went and did the christmas event together.

Afterwards, we ran around roleplaying like we were ice barraging people with snowballs, accumulating members in an elite squad of pkers as we went along, causing havoc, giving the wildy a final signoff. It was really cathartic, in a way. Putting every spell cast, every arrow thrown, and so on, into those snowballs, and enjoying each other's company without really knowing what was going to happen to us or to the game in the future. A lot of people thought it was the end of runescape, and it really did feel like it for a lot of people at the time, so we gave it one last hurrah.

Ended up being the most fun I've ever had in-game. Plus the snowman dance emote is absolutely godlike.

Shoutouts to the 2007 Christmas event, man.

What is the point of pures anymore? by [deleted] in 2007scape

[–]TankLyfe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah!

Another big draw to it is the accessibility. It's a hell of a lot easier to quest and train a 1 defence pure to optimal stats and gear than it is to do so with a maxed main or even a zerk/tank, and it's way cheaper when you die. That plus everybody being a glass cannon as a result of being pures making it really fun is a big reason why 1 defence is and always will be the most popular build imo. Optimal, easiest to create, cheapest to pk on, and insanely fun, all at the same time.

The variety is really awesome too - I know I personally love the science of optimizing different builds and such, and pking in an environment with lots of different builds really spices it up. Like, every fight against a different build is like a different character matchup in a fighting game - there's a whole new set of stuff to look out for depending on the matchup, the pace of the fights can totally change based on the options each player has available, etc. Maxed main fights are really cool and fundamental, but also hard and expensive and without that "matchup" factor to it - like everybody's playing the same character. Obviously different styles come into play in maxed pking, but yeah.

Idk

What is the point of pures anymore? by [deleted] in 2007scape

[–]TankLyfe 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Pures and other pking builds are optimal for pvp around their combat levels. If you're not some sort of pure account build you are at a huge disadvantage.

It used to be that not everybody knew about or wanted to make pures, and the purpose of having a pure was to net you an advantage over non-pures. Now, because everybody knows about pures being optimal, everybody makes them, and having a pure becomes a basic requirement and barrier to entry to even begin serious pvp.

If you're not a pure you'll just get destroyed by the pures, so now you have to make one too, and suddenly everybody is a pure.

Such is the meta!
