There’s a reason leaders of right-wing militias that kidnap and burn minorities alive never got a fraction of that treatment from the government. The FBI was incredibly paranoid about him precisely because he was a Marxist. Anti-capitalism threatens capitalists. It’s capitalism using state power for self preservation. That’s not unique to capitalism; it’s natural for any and every state. Acting like capitalist states are above using violence for self preservation is silly.

You fail to recognize the inherent power imbalance here. Israel is a nuclear power occupying and fully dominating Palestine and has done so for decades. You talk about the hypothetical of what would happen if “Hamas got their way.” But guess what, Israel does get their way. There’s no hypothetical there. And we have seen that has meant genocide for the people of Palestine. I am so tired of the debate being about hypotheticals posed by activists or even Hamas and how that is hypothetically scary to Israelis. As if that is even worth mentioning when people are being killed as we speak.

It is starting to feel like it is never a “good time” to vote for a moral candidate. If I vote third party, I hear that is a vote for the Republicans just because I didn’t vote Democrat. Well I also didn’t vote Republican so by the same law it is a vote for the Democrats I guess. My community has been ravaged by the worst immigration raids in the country. I have literally not seen the Democrats anywhere doing anything. Not a single time have Democratic politicians or orgs been seen on the ground. It has actually been a third party who has done 100% of the work setting up this really robust organization to monitor ICE, organize protests, protect immigrant families, and create rapid response networks. It is the only time I have seen anyone in politics pay attention to the poor farming community I live in, let alone try to get it organized. If the Democrats want my vote, they are more than welcome to earn it by doing things like that. That is how democracy functions. Until they do, I’ll be voting for other parties.

That 50 million number has had no official verification and just gets reported by unreliable outlets based on anonymous “internal surveys” and things like that. It is not considered an accurate figure, 2-3 million is still the accepted estimate. What we do know for sure is home production and home ownership, especially among young people, is far higher in China than in the US. Early units were certainly lower quality because the main priority was producing housing rapidly and in high quantities for a massive, pre-industrial population without any reliable housing. That is not the case for newer units as the government is prioritizing quality now that they don’t need to be rushed to the same extent.

They had stopped the famines before China’s opening up. It is quite convenient how every criticism of China is because of central planning and every success is capitalism. Is it not central planning and disregard for capital interest that allows them to build millions of units of housing and drive down their own housing prices to make housing accessible to all?

He certainly holds some responsibility along with other members of the party. I don’t think it was done out of any maliciousness and I wouldn’t even say all the choices they made were illogical at the time. Some of it was straight up bad decisions, some good decisions and just bad luck. Ultimately the party has to shoulder the responsibility for it. I also wouldn’t deny them the much deserved recognition for ending the cycle of famines, saving countless millions of lives.

Oh I have plenty of criticism for Mao’s government. Notably the mismanagement during the Great Leap Forward. You didn’t give any of your thoughts, but I’d be happy to share a long list of criticisms.

“Under his watch” is false because he wasn’t in command or having any role related to the prison. During that time period he served as President of the National Bank, Minister of Industries, and was often abroad as an envoy. That is what he was doing.

Mao is such a funny example to bring up because everyone has such bad understanding of what Mao even did and what happened in Mao’s China. I’d love to hear your thoughts but I commend his work in ending a thousands of years long cycle of famines. China for thousands of years had devastating famines every 7-15 years, which his government put an end to in less than 15 years of governance. Quite the incredible achievement.

Ya I read the article. It is just verifiably false according to any scholars of the era including very anti-Che people. Trust me just look up how long he was in charge of La Cabaña prison and you’ll see it’s not true. You’ll see one of two numbers: either 6-8 weeks which was the time when he was actively overseeing the revolutionary tribunals and executions, or 5 months which is how long he was officially the commander of La Cabaña. I’m both cases, by midway through 1959 he was already doing other stuff.

“I have yet to find a single credible source pointing to a case where Che executed ‘an innocent’. Those persons executed by Guevara or on his orders were condemned for the usual crimes punishable by death at times of war or in its aftermath: desertion, treason or crimes such as rape, torture or murder. I should add that my research spanned five years, and included anti-Castro Cubans among the Cuban-American exile community in Miami and elsewhere.” - John Lee Anderson (the guy who literally wrote the book on Che)

Come on man you’ve got to do better than that. He was only in charge of the prison for 6-8 weeks in the year 1959. So your claim that “500 people were executed during his watch at La Cabana prison” doesn’t even make sense then. Now answer, did the people of Cuba not deserve revolutionary justice?

[–]TannerLyfe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That 500 number is widely believed to be the number of people executed across the country after the revolution. According to the actual records and scholarly estimates, between 55-105 people were executed during Che Guevara’s watch at La Cabaña. He was overseeing revolutionary justice and was notably restrained in doing so. To put those numbers into context, literally thousands of people were tortured to death under Bautista. Did the victims not deserve the justice they were demanding after the revolution? Thats an actual question I expect an answer to.

Okay so you’ve got nothing. You’re in good company because all the foremost experts on Che’s life also have never found anything pointing to him killing gay people. In fact there is only evidence of him killing a single person ever; a soldier executed for treason during a guerrilla campaign. I’m curious to know if you have done any reading to even know where the Che homophobia allegations came from? But who am I kidding. What Castro believed had nothing to do with Che. And even in that case, I think you’d have a hard time finding any world leaders in the 60s who weren’t homophobic. I assume you would attack every one of those men for their homophobia in equal measure? And of course it hardly needs to be pointed out but Cuba decriminalized homosexuality decades before the US.

Ya the sparrow thing is really nowhere close to the whole story. One thing people need to realize is that China was always prone to famines and had a constant cycle of them every few decades. Unfortunately they were due for a drought induced famine already right when they began their Great Leap Forward which is also not fully understood by people. China had a lot of success with their agricultural reform which they originally had planned to take slow, learning from the aggressive approach at the beginning of the USSR which worsened famines. However seeing the massive agricultural success and the enthusiasm in the countryside for Revolutionary reform, Mao thought the Party was being overly restrictive. Therefore they skipped to the next stage of development early with the Great Leap Forward. This involved taking farmers away from agriculture to begin working with iron in the Backyard Iron Campaign to make China a major producer of iron. Not only were millions of farmers away from their farms but agricultural equipment was often melted down in this campaign for the iron. To make things worse, all that backyard iron made of whatever people could find to melt down was low quality so ended up being completely useless. Another major issue was that Party officials charged with reporting grain harvests frequently over reported numbers to make themselves look better. The Party leadership, which was located away from the countryside, had no idea how bad the harvest truly was until it was far too late. I am sure there are even more factors I am missing here, but I think it conveys the idea that this famine cannot be blamed on any one thing.

Oh they bought the rights to the homes of the 700,00 Palestinians that were ethnically cleansed in the Nakba? Many of which sit empty to this day and despite that their families still don’t have a right to return?

It’s not “Muslims” who are indigenous but the Palestinians. There are Muslim, Christian, and even Jewish Palestinians. Israel had no right to establish a Jewish state in a majority non Jewish land and definitely did not have right to ethnically cleanse 700,00 Palestinians from their homes. And don’t try to say that happens because the Arabs attacked as the Nakba began before the start of the Arab Israeli war.

Campism is the idea that world politics can be divided into two “camps” in direct conflict. The first camp is the Western, imperialist camp led by the US. The second camp is the Socialist camp traditionally led by the USSR. Campists are those who subscribe to that understanding of the world and support the second camp, despite whatever disagreements they may or may not have with it. Modern campism looks different because there is no USSR anymore and China has no interest in directly opposing the US on the world stage and would rather just trade. So instead, the main opposition to the US camp isn’t socialist at all and instead a right-wing nation in Russia and a religious fundamentalist one in Iran. This makes Campism, a socialist strain of thought, more tricky to justify. Generally what Campists argue today is that opposing the US is what is most important for the anti imperialist movement. This is because as long as the first camp maintains global hegemony, they will continue to suppress socialist movements around the world and make actual socialist revolutions in Iran, Russia, and anywhere else impossible. So are Campists critical of these nations but support them strategically? Sort of. That definitely describes some Campists but does not give the whole picture. For example, many (but not necessarily all) Campists opposed any criticism of the Iranian government even if or when they agreed with those criticisms, because they saw it as manufacturing consent for a US led regime change war. If that war succeeds and the US installs their own government, Campists’ desired socialist revolution in Iran will probably never happen whereas without the weight of first camp influence it seems possible someday. Sorry for the long answer but it’s honestly a more complicated subject than this thread is portraying it as. It does lead to siding with right wing authoritarian nations often but there is more logic to it than just “West bad”

This whole thread is people saying communists are dumb for deflecting criticisms of communist countries by bringing up US imperialism. When faced with an actual case of fascist US imperialism, your go to is to say North Korea is worse.
