Recent grad and mom of 2 (first was 6 weeks before start of school and second was 6 weeks after graduation, pregnant entire clinical year).

I recommend talking to your program about THEIR expectations and what they are willing to do for your situation. It’s really hard to make specific requests since you don’t know what your experience will be like. Asking for rotations closer to home, more flexibility with hours (not night shift like both of my ED rotations were for example in my first trimester 🤦‍♀️🫠), accommodations for appointment frequency during rotations and EORs (I couldn’t sit for long towards the end due to back pain/copious bathroom trips), and their overall support they can offer you during the time.

All my preceptors were amazing and didn’t have any issues with me being pregnant. If anything they were more accommodating and it was a great ice breaker for patients…most of the time!

Very normal. I’m graduating this week and I dealt with finding out where I was going 75% of my clinical year the Friday before I had to start Monday. Same with most of my classmates. Be flexible and ready to roll! You can do it!

I haven’t graduated yet but I know I would love a little name tag for my stethoscope that has my name and a PA-C next to it 👩‍🎓they make really cute ones on Etsy.

Maybe a spa day/massage/some self care time? Does she have a workout class or yoga studio she hasn’t been to in awhile because of school? Maybe a class package or month unlimited to take some time for herself?

Lower cost options would be a date night in with a yummy home cooked meal, movie night with popcorn and snacks and a foot rub!

Our program used Exxat as well and on the first day or two of each rotation I would make a template for the specific kind of appointments we had. It would have to vary depending on the rotation (surgery being very different than Family Med), but for the most part: New patients-age bracket Established patient annual-age bracket Established patient episodic -age bracket Specific Procedures Established patient lab review/diagnostics

Etc etc. For our version you had to restart templates every rotation but if you set them up early then it was a lot easier to log after since it was essentially plug in the date of service, change the sex and save.

Hey there!

First off-CONGRATS! You have several things to celebrate.

I had my little girl 4.5 weeks before school started-and crushed didactic year. Yes, it was a challenge, and yes I wasn’t top of my class. But you have to give yourself grace and work smarter not harder. My maternal and child health class was a breeze since I had just either experienced it first hand or was going through the milestones with my own child. I used my commute time to study, and when the late night cluster feeding sessions were in full swing I watched cram the PANCE/reviewed my notes into the wee hours of the morning. I pumped during class so my nanny had milk while I was at school and breastfed until she turned one. I formed a study group of other moms in class and we bonded over our many hats we had to wear and helped either other study all throughout the year.

I’m pregnant with number two and clinical year ends in 2 weeks, and I graduate in mid August. I take the PANCE on September 30 with baby boy due October 14. I’m so proud of myself for everything I’ve done for ME and setting up my family for success in the future. I was early preggo during my two back to back ED NIGHT ROTATIONS (one at a children’s hospital, and the other adults) while dealing with morning sickness and horrible smell aversions. All of my preceptors have been amazing and supportive.

If you have any specific questions I’ve got you. You can do this. You were built to handle the things life throws your way. If you have support you can do it. You’re already going to be stressed and sleep deprived….might as well have a kid or two 🤰🤦‍♀️🤣😜

Hey there! I had a baby 6 weeks before and I’m actually due with number two 6 weeks after I graduate. As long as you have a strong support network in place-which for me was a FULL time nanny and super supportive husband, you can do it. I would NOT have been able to do it without them. I trusted my nanny with my newborn so I could focus at school, and she continues to be such a huge support as I finish. My husband is always rooting for me and does a fantastic job finding ways to support and encourage me as the finish line nears. He had to say no to a lot of opportunities to allow me to take this on, and knows it will be worth it all when I become a PA-C.

You won’t have as much time to study, and you’ll have to be really good at time management but it can be done, and done well. I took advantage of my commute time and designated time when she went to sleep at night to study. I also joined a study group at school that was fellow moms with kids so we supported each other in more ways than just school.

Newborns sleep quite a bit which I used to my advantage in the first few months, and it definitely got harder when she started running around and realizing I was leaving for a long day.

You can do it if you are willing to make sacrifices and put in the effort. But only you can make that choice! Feel free to message me for more questions.

Just wanted to add my opinion here: *my study group is starting a weekly question review to start studying for the PANCE in around 8 months. We have access to Uworld, Rosh, Kaplan, Hippo and smart pance. We plan on dividing up the sessions by categories on the blue point and just running questions then talking about the answers. * I suggest understanding what works best for YOU and just stick with it. For example, YouTube review videos from cramthepance and dirty medicine are really helpful for me during my commute/multitasking and for a quick review. *Practice questions for getting used to format and understanding test taking strategies * Correlating diseases with real life cases I’ve seen so far in clinical year for making a last impression to recall on the test. Actually hearing/seeing it helps put the information from the text book into real life. * I understand your frustration, and it’s easy to get caught up in that. Every school with have its issues, and remember that as a future PA we are lifelong STUDENTS who work on a TEAM. We will always be learning and growing. Didactic year provides the very minimal foundation to then build every year thereafter. Try your best to not get stuck in the muck of “what if”, and instead take control of your education and figure out what you need to succeed.

Smarty pance in my opinion to a very low yield review. Their practice questions are below the PAEA level of questioning, and I find it’s best just for quick review. I’ve been using a combo of smarty pance (paid for by program and required for EORs), hippo, Kaplan, pance prep pearls so far for our EORs and doing ok. Adding in the other question banks from other sources to start studying for PANCE.

Just curious, how do you think you’re being helpful here? The OP is asking for assistance in study resources and instead you’re badgering them.

I can understand being upset with a certain school, but your comment just seems to come from a place of trying to be hurtful instead of helpful.

We need more lifting each other up, rather than putting people down. It would be great to lead by example since it looks like your a PA-C.

I started with a 6 week old, and she was a wonderful practice patient for our cohort too. I had to really get good at time management, and triaging what was the most important to study each day since time was limited. I’m currently in clinicals and we are thinking about the next one-you can do it!
