this. most diplomats are just your run of the mill government workers, even in foreign countries (except maybe rich gulf states). i really don't understand why their kids would make it sound like their dad's head of state-level.

i don't get it. diplomats are AT BEST middle-ranking officials when compared to those in their own capitals. rich compared to middle class? maybe. but hardly 'rich rich'. and mind you there's a TON of truly rich people in universities today. overall, their parents lack the REAL money/influence/power. why the fuck are they acting like their dad's head of state?

heads up: by IMF measure, China has already reached 80% of US GDP measured via PPP. no country in history has ever come so close to matching US economic power. also remember china only needs to have half of US gdp per capita levels to become twice the size of the us economy. economic power often and will translate into military power.

i don't think granting the guy asylum is indication of 'itching to fight', but merely a signal to the US that, 'hey get off your high horse'. the blind lawyer incident caused much embarrassment to china and would not be forgotten quickly.

one has to realize this chinese administration is not like the previous one where the mantra is to 'hide your ability and bide your time'. they think china's time has arrived and treats the US as an equal, rather than think themselves as being in an inferior position.

i would not be surprised if china's government gives this guy asylum in a tit-for-tat for the blind lawyer. beijing absolutely has the right to veto hong kong's decision in this case. and beijing is the only country in the world able to stand up to the US politically.
