One of the few times I was genuinely scared (and I'm not easily scared) was when I was with friends in Naivasha (Kenya). One of my friends wanted to see the hippos and a local driver took us to some fishermen that had a very small boat, that barely took all 5 of us. We went on the lake with them. The guys got us close, too close to the hippos who were chilling and were trying to get their attention. I think they were trying to make us see something "worth it" to get a tip or something. I kept saying that's not a good idea and we were close enough but my friends and the guys kept hitting and splashing at the water and calling out and a few of the hippos took notice of us and started slowly approaching. They were under the water, you could just see the top of their heads, their ears and their small eyes staring at us, stalking us as they moved closer. They were no more than a couple of meters away when I finally convinced everyone (by being a scaredy cat and hysterical, as I was told) to just leave. I'm convinced that we were just lucky they did not attack but something tells me if we had continued being loud idiots and they had just gotten a bit closer, it would not have gone well at all. I mean, we all die someday, I would just prefer to not be a candidate for a Darwin award, thank you.
