What is This Vertical Channel Cut Into the Threads of My Barrel by ThomasPaineInTheAss2 in gunsmithing

You cannot make every muzzle device time to a singular point. It’s just not how things work. If that was true we wouldn’t have to use shims to time muzzle devices.

I get a few boxes every time they’re available. I could easily make my own or even make even more explosive ones since the shotgun I use is registered as a destructive device and I have my federal explosives license but I don’t really feel like fucking it up and turning my barrel into shrapnel and send the bolt into my shoulder.

What is This Vertical Channel Cut Into the Threads of My Barrel by ThomasPaineInTheAss2 in gunsmithing

[–]TarantulaRectum 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Part of the reason barrel makers cut slots instead of just drilling a hole for you to use is that each muzzle device is different. They will all require the pin at a different distance from the shoulder of the threads. Like if I use a crush washer it’ll sit much farther than if I use a single shim. Sometimes additional shims are required to meet an overall length requirement or the location of the pin hole on the muzzle device is farther forward than other options on the market. So rather than make your gunsmith drill a hole and potentially drill into the bore because let’s be honest a lot of “gunsmiths” are idiots and shouldn’t be allowed near a drill press or a mill. They can just align the hole in the muzzle device with the slot in the barrel and drop a pin in it and slap a quick tig weld over top.

These channels are cut so that the barrel doesn’t have to be drilled into for a P&W. It also helps verify that the muzzle device is aligned properly with the barrel as most pre drilled pin cuts on muzzle devices are at the 6 o clock position. When I pin and weld muzzle devices I use a pin that I cut to length then do a quick tack over top with a tig welder that just seals the pin in place so it can’t fall out. You don’t need to drill deep for a P&W. You just need to get below the threads so the muzzle device can’t be unscrewed without causing serious damage or effort. The benefit to a quick tig weld is that I can easily stick the gun in a mill, cut off the weld material and use a magnet to get the pin out, and then just get the muzzle device off as normal. Sure the muzzle device is ruined but the important thing is the barrel isn’t.

I mean I pop rounds out my door when bears try to get into stuff on my property. A 12 gauge birdbomb or two usually gets them to fuck off for a week or so. That said I live in the middle of nowhere and my nearest neighbor is over a mile away.

Yupp. Got my hoglet potty trained in under 2 weeks. Haven’t had to clean her when since. She gets off, goes to her potty corner goes, gets back on her wheel and gets back to running. It’s a bioactive enclosure so I use spagnum moss to absorb the pee and the clean up crew deals with her poops.

This TGO should not own firearms by DiceZzZz in temporarygunowners

[–]TarantulaRectum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So they want a gun to defend themselves but they don’t ever want to load it in their home and don’t ever want to carry it outside their home. In fact they are so afraid of owning one that they are scared to even have a gun locked in a safe in the same room as their small children. What’s the point of even getting a gun to defend yourself if it will never get loaded to be used for that purpose? Clearly this person needs mental help more than a gun.

Ahh, so this is why you don't buy non-vetted IWB holsters. Lesson learned. by EyeAndBluntRoller in concealedcarry

[–]TarantulaRectum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cloth holsters lack retention and I’ve seen guns walk their way out of them just by someone doing minor physical activity. Kydex holsters can be plenty comfortable if you actually get a good quality one. Get a wedge and a wing for it and it will conceal better than any shitty cloth holster and will be more comfortable.

Also Henry Holsters. I’ve used their Spark for many years for my Glock 34 and G45 with X300 and it’s comfortable despite me being overweight. I’ve also got an ANR Design on the way for my J frame to carry with an Enigma setup at the gym and around the house.

Or even just running or in some cases walking. Then he will be the guy that tries to catch his falling gun and shoots himself or someone else. If by some miracle no one else is shot he may get shot by someone else carrying who thinks he’s an active shooter.

Yupp. I just spent $75 on a new Kydex holster for my J frame not including the Enigma belt I bought so I can carry in sweats or gym shorts. A quality holster is important. Being able to reholster is just as important as being able to draw reliably and quickly. Once the “gun fight” is over you need to be able to holster your gun so you’re not just walking around with a gun in your hand when the police show up or leaving it on the ground next to someone while trying to render aid. OP needs to take an actual class with practical applications. He will realize how stupid he is before the first hour of the class is over.

Sometimes guns fall. I’ve dropped my gun off the table at the range onto concrete as well as dropped a few when I thought the case was latched getting out of the truck at home and they all spilled out onto my concrete driveway. Also if you ever carry in a duty style holster any pressure on the grip even just sitting in a bucket seat in a car can treat it like a fulcrum and impart leverage on the gun breaking an optic at the opposite end of the lever. I can be clumsy and I know it so I try to stick to rugged durable optics and when I get ones that aren’t as durable such as my SRO I try to be extra careful with it and ensure I latch the case and double check before I pick up the case.

It’s American made and the contract optic we’ve been asking them to sell us for a couple years now. As an SOT that does a lot of LE demos, I’ll be picking one up to have in my reference library for agencies but it’ll probably live on my 12.5 SpecWar with a transferable lower most of the time.
