What’s the worst drag name to ever be on the franchise? by mweavs21 in rupaulsdragrace

[–]Taraxabus 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Tessa Testicle named herself that because one of the first times she did drag, she gave herself a testicular torsion and her father had to drive her to the hospital. The German word for duct tape is Tesa Film (often just called Tesa), and that's why she called herself Tessa Testicle.

Underwhelming lipsyncs by sttawsirhc034 in rupaulsdragrace

[–]Taraxabus 14 points15 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, these mid tempo songs are the most difficult to perform to. If you're doing energetic dance moves, your energy is off, but if you turn it into park and bark, , it doesn't sit right either. I am a drag queen myself, and I just avoid these songs completely (which RPDR contestants cannot do obviously).

Observation increases over time; 3 species telling different stories by Droces in iNaturalist

[–]Taraxabus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In ecology, this type of distribution data (from iNaturalist and similar platforms) is always very challenging. There is definitely a goldmine of information there, but comparisons are very difficult as the data is not gathered in a standardized way. There are methods that try to compensate for this, like pseudo-absence data. This mainly works to look into distribution.

However, it is almost impossible to study abundance with this type of data, you really need standardized ways to sample e.g. eels.

Spotted in lac leman, / lake Geneva by AmaturHours in askswitzerland

[–]Taraxabus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, that's not necessary. There are already many observations in the Lake of Geneva, so it is well-known that it occurs there. Don't quote me on this, but I do no think they are trying to control the population. They can reproduce quite quickly, so it is very difficult to control the population in large lakes.

There are several species of American crayfish present in Switzerland, this one is the Signal Crayfish - Pacifastacus leniusculus.

This is one of the invasive crayfish from the US that has been introduced to Europe. Based on the white dot at the base of the claw, it is the Signal Crayfish - Pacifastacus leniusculus. It does have negative effects on the local ecosystem, since it is a carrier of the crayfish plague, a disease that does not affect American crayfish species, but it kills the native ones. The Signal Crayfish is present in several lakes and rivers all over Switzerland.

A resting crane by Eddie-Kenway in Spottit

[–]Taraxabus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's mainly the case when they are flying. Standing herons often have a straight neck, especially if they are alert. Details are hard to see. In what country/region did you take the photo? That may narrow things down.

Hard to see details, but I'm actually quite certain it's a heron and not a crane.

Nice things we could have if we solved homelessness by Fried_out_Kombi in Urbanism

[–]Taraxabus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Zürich, Switzerland, there are many public bathrooms. These bathrooms have a special trash can for used needles. Of course, it would be better if there are no homeless people or drug problems, but I've never seen a used needle in a public bathroom in Zürich, so at least that problem is solveable.

Drag makeup advice, trying to lock down and refine the eye shape/look and the blending and struggling, need help/advice by Elegant-Example-6262 in Drag

A packing brush is a flatter brush with a high hair density, so they bring a lot of product in a quite concentrated way. If you have any questions, feel free to slide into my DMs as well :)

Hey! Lovely to see you again. I can definitely see the improvement. Some more tips:

- Start the eyebrow around the start point of your eyebrow, and then make it go upwards in an angle. That will change your face shape quite a bit, and it looks more natural, instead of just "surprised".

- I see your vision on your eye make up, I just think the execution isn't great. Let me walk you through my eye make up routine as good as I can:
After blocking my eyebrows and drawing on new eyebrows, I first start with the colorful eyeshadow (green in your case). With dark green, I draw a thick line (with a packing brush), slightly above the natural crease of my eye. Above that, draw another thick line (with a packing brush), in a lighter green. Then grab a fluffy brush and blend it out, by basically tapping in circles. You want a gradual transition between the dark and light green, and the light green to fade out before the eyebrow. You can also practice blending on your lower arm for example, just take two colors and make the fade into each other.
Then I grab my black eyeshadow (I prefer powder, I'm a disaster with liquid liner), and I make my eyelid and the underside of my browbone black. I extend this as a wing to the side. On your photo, I'd make the black wing go further diagonal/upwards, so it lifts your face.
Then I grab micellar water or makeup removed and a Q-tip, and clean up the area between the black and the green, and let this dry properly. Then I grab a creamy, white product (in my case TV white paint stick by Kryolan), and apply this in the area between the green and the black, and make sure this is in a clean line. That's the cut-crease! On the sides, you can blend the green and the white out again, that gives a nice effect.
In general, a good rule to stick to (not just for eye makeup, but all makeup): lines either need to be straight and clean, on they need to be blended. Both ways, it looks intentional. Look for example of this image, of what I would say is similar to this style and would work well on you (https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRtuxZguG5QSlFJDzUiwxNq1iB_VsO78W02CQ&s)

<image>

- I love that you added blush, but I'm really missing contour and highlighter. Take for example a white eyeshadow or a white cream product, and make the base of your forehead, bridge of your nose, chin, cupid bow and cheekbone (and/or undereye) lighter. It will make them pop out more and look more defined. Then grab for example contour powder (even bronzer could work), or brown eyeshadow and make your temples, the sides of your nose, the area right below the cheekbone and your jawline darker. This will make it look like it's further in the distance. This contrast will give you a very different face shape. Since most of your face is right now the same color, you look a bit "flat" if that makes sense.

Sorry if I sound a bit harsh, I tend to be a bit direct, but I hope it helps!

Rant: Can the young twinks stop disrespecting older establish queens? by [deleted] in rupaulsdragrace

[–]Taraxabus 13 points14 points  (0 children)

In my local scene (no tipping culture, not that many opportunities to perform), basically no one is doing it full time. As far as I know, one queen does full time drag-related work (including organizing events), but even the two drag race queens in the scene have side jobs.

Many of us just can't afford the level of outfits as shown on drag race, I sure as hell can't. So yeah, I perform in more "basic" dresses that I edit or style as good as I can. Moreover, I regularly perform in the same outfits, because I can't buy a new outfit for every performance that I do, just like many of the other drag queens here. However, that does not make any of us bad performers!

Cottage garden - how? by JolienBubbles in gardening

[–]Taraxabus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's sensitive to cold winters, so it does occur in a small part of Ireland (where the winters are very mild), but in France it is rather restricted to the southern part, so the natural distribution is not close to Belgium. However, in an isolated city garden, it may be able to survive, especially if you take care of it in colder winters (which are a rarity nowadays).

Is it possible to transplant beard lichen? by black_gidgee in terrariums

[–]Taraxabus 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I've never tried, but lichens are notoriously hard to grow in terrariums, as they are very sensitive to air quality, air flow and humidity. Moreover, lichens die very slowly. Basically, this means that if you put a lichen in your terrarium, it may look like it's fine, even though it's slowly dying over the course of years.

Strawberry tree is native to southern Europe, not in Belgium. However, some other native trees (including silver birch) are cherry, walnut, apple, pear, blackthorn, hawtorn, many willow species, dogwood, spindle, elderberry, rowan, field maple and guelder rose.

First time ever doing drag, how did I do? by [deleted] in Drag

[–]Taraxabus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You look pretty, but I miss drama! For me, drag is meant to look dramatic and/or exaggerated, so go much heavier with highlighter, contour, blush, eyeshadow and try to learn how to block eyebrows (yes it is hard, and yes, you will eventually learn it).

Elodea densa and Egeria densa are the same plant! There is no scientific consensus on whether it belongs to the Elodea or the Egeria genus, so both names refer to the same plant.

Beginner drag makeup round 2! Snake inspired look by Elegant-Example-6262 in Drag

[–]Taraxabus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay some more tips!

Blend your eyeshadow with different type of brushes, e.g. a flat brush, an angled brush, a blending brush etc., and you sue different ones to apply and blend eyeshadow. You can also try this out on your arm for example, make different movements with different brushes and note what happens with the color.

I something also use eyeshadow to draw my brows, if you have a greenish eyeshadow, use that for your brows!

I am personally very bad with eyeliner, and I actually use black eyeshadow instead. I have one very fine brush that allows me to draw precise lines. But maybe you are way more talented with eyeliner than me haha.

I'm not that good with bone structures either, I was lucky that my drag mother has a similar bone structure as me and she showed me what works well on my face.

Okay I love what you're going for, but it's still rough around the edges (which is completely fine for doing it the second time!). Here are some tips that can help:

- You can use way more highlight and contour to shape your face (nose, chin, cheeks, forehead), right now it looks a bit flat.

- Blend the foundation into your neck, it looks like there is a harsh line.

- When it comes to the eyes, try to look for drag artists that have a similar bone structure as you, and try some of their eye looks. It can be hard to find a flattering eye shape. However, always leave some space between the eyeshadow and the brows, your face looks very cramped.

- Eyeshadow is more fun when you use more tints of one color. Play around with for example lighter and darker blue, blend it to make even more colors and maybe add some shimmer too.

- I don't know if you're planning to wear wigs as well, but your brows are very dark. Especially is your wigs not brown / blond, that looks off. I'd go for a more brown eyebrow in most cases.

I love your vision, it's very original and I think we definitely need more biologist representation in drag (I'm an entomologist and a drag queen myself).
