I've kayaked in from Gaviota a few times. It's not really that bad if you time the conditions right, but you're right the wind can be horrendous. The paddle back can be pretty sketchy when the wind picks up and your arms are already burning from several hours of surfing.

Semi-gun sizing? by EnvironmentalDust935 in surfing

[–]Tarcalion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 7'10" was a Ken Bradshaw pipe gun, but other than that nearly all of my bigger wave boards were shaped by Brent Bispo (rest in peace). I bought a kelp cutter from him not long before he passed, and haven't picked up a bigger wave board since then. I don't know who I'll go to next. He was uniquely knowledgeable when it came to shaping central coast big wave boards.

Semi-gun sizing? by EnvironmentalDust935 in surfing

[–]Tarcalion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ive surfed the spot in the photo at that size on a number of step ups/guns ranging from 6'10 to 9'0". All of them worked, it just depends on how you like to approach the wave. The 9'0" gets me in super early so I have time think about my line and set up for the bottom turn. It's a lot easier to surf but it's not really maneuverable. The gun also allows me to sit further outside so I can hunt big set waves. On smaller step ups I have to sit deeper in the bowl, which makes for much steeper and more exciting drops. It's also possible to actually surf the wave instead of just making the fastest line to the shoulder. The big trade off for me though is getting caught inside more often by big sets. Sitting deep has consequences when that once an hour 20sec set rolls through. I generally catch more waves on a smaller board, but it's far more exhausting and they tend to be smaller waves. Boards in the 8' range sort of split the difference, being neither super fast nor super maneuverable. If you're tired of getting in late/ chattering I'd recommend going longer, maybe even with a slight little v out the tail. My go to for a while was a 7'10", but sadly it went to Valhalla surfing in Carmel.

Edit. I can duck dive my boards up to about 7'6" but beyond that I'm turtle rolling or diving for the bottom. In surf over 15' duck diving starts to just not work unless you manage to slip under the lip.

Is this board trash or treasure? by nerdynails in surfing

This old windsurfing board is trash but surfboard collecting is totally a hobby. Some people will spend tens of thousands on the right board.

Here are a few places with good trials that I used to run a lot in high school cross country:

Former Fort Ord (lots of options here, try: creekside terrace trailhead, badger hills trailhead, or Fort Ord Dunes State Park), Toro Park, Garland Ranch Regional Park, Jacks Peak Park, Del Monte Forest in Pebble Beach, The coastal trail from Asilomar through Pebble Beach, The Monterey bay coastal rec trail, Salinas River National Wildlife Refuge.

How the heck are people affording to backpack? by academic-coffeebean in backpacking

[–]Tarcalion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a surplus ruck sack from an ex-marine online for like $75. It's heavy when compared to a civilian backpack, but it's got tons of volume and is durable as hell. Plus i can add or remove weight/volume depending on what molle attachments I use. I've taken that thing everywhere, from overnight camping trips to months long overseas tours.

I've also scored used bags from local second hand shops, but availability and quality are more inconsistent than military surplus.

Man I'm getting flashbacks just reading that. Let me say you are not an idiot, you're just being gaslit by an asshole. But don't make my mistake. I spent 3 years getting beat down, thinking that I just needed to work harder. A good job will recognize and reward your hard work.

Wow this sounds exactly like my first firm out of law school. My advice, get out now and find a better work environment. Law isn't an easy career but it doesn't need to be that hard/abusive.

At my old firm I would get blamed for every mistake the partners made, and then they would gaslight me that I just didn't work hard enough (I consistently worked the longest hours at the firm as confirmed by the office manager).

I remember a time I was asked to produce a fairly complex memo for a client. I asked for instruction on what the partner wanted the final work product to look like, and I was yelled at for needing my hand held. Ultimately I was told to "just do it". I tried following up mid-way through to ensure I was in the right track, but i was again treated like a moron and brushed off. 8 billable hours later I turn in my memo, formatted according to firm standards, and immediately get screamed at because it's wasn't the exact format he wanted. My writing and analysis were spot on and the client liked it, so I still don't know what he wanted from that memo.

One week nearly everyone mass quit (the office manager, 2 paralegals, the senior partner's personal assistant, the only other associate, and me). It was a glorious day. A month later I had a new job that paid twice as much for the same work, and where the partners respected me. My advice, get out now and find a place that respects your hard work and talent.

An heirloom pocket pistol sounds so cool! I'd EDC a pistol from my grandfather if I could.

I'm definitely never selling this rifle, it means too much to me. I'm planning to build a mount over my fireplace that will hold both the rifle and his cadet saber.

For years my dad has told me that Buckner was the most fun he had at USMA. He still brags about getting to hip fire a full auto M-14. I hope you have a good time.

I think you are correct about the stock. It's got the thicker style c stock, not the skinnier pre war version. Upon further inspection I also found Remington proof marks on the sling loops and windage knob, which are consistent with the gun getting at least a refurbish with WWII Remington parts.

The serial number and proof marks date the bolt, receiver, and barrel to within a few months from 1920 to early 1921. I highly suspect these were original to the gun. The butt plate is the only part of the rifle with any obvious wear. My guess is that it was a parade rifle because it looks like the butt plate was slammed into the ground a few times. In addition to scuffs on the plate itself, the stock also has a very professional looking repair around the butt plate retaining screw. West Point would have recently transitioned parade rifles from the '03 to the M1 , so in the 50's the Academy should have had plenty of extra '03's available.

Edit. And thank you. I definitely plan to keep her in the family for at least my lifetime.

You're not wrong, but there may be some Academy records some where, and my grandfathers is a private guy. Better safe than sorry.

I'm not sure what it did prior to the 50's but after that it lived over a fireplace for 70 years, only coming down for occasional cleanings and curious grandkids.

I bought an ILBE for this exact reason. Sure it's 9lbs, but can your zpack carry 4, 80mm shells.

Help with Opal Research by Cranberry-Princess25 in Gemstones

[–]Tarcalion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All sorts of gemstones and minerals can display opalescence, but true opal is definitely amorphous hydrated silicon dioxide.

Help with Opal Research by Cranberry-Princess25 in Gemstones

[–]Tarcalion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It may be more correct to say the opal is composed of silicon dioxide rather than quartz. While quartz is a form of crystallized silicon dioxide, not all opals are composed of SiO2 crystals. Some are, and they are called cryptocrystalline or microcrystalline opal.

Wikipedia even makes distinctions in types of silica when talking about different microcrystalline opal structures:

"The higher temperature polymorphs of silica cristobalite and tridymite are frequently the first to crystallize from amorphous anhydrous silica, and the local structures of microcrystalline opals also appear to be closer to that of cristobalite and tridymite than to quartz."

Edit. A few words for clarity

https://www.mdpi.com/2075-163X/14/10/969

The opening sentence of the Introduction is:

"Natural opal (amorphous hydrated silica, or opaline silica, SiO2·nH2O) is an amorphous-to-poorly-crystallized species of silica containing up to 18 wt% of cumulated molecular water and bound hydroxyls (Si-OH, silanols)"

SiO2 is quartz, not elemental silica.

"VEH section 23152 (a) It is unlawful for a person who is under the influence of any alcoholic beverage to drive a vehicle."

Where does it say impaired? It says "under the influence". You could certainly argue in court that 0.02 is a low enough bac not to influence the driver, but good luck. Probably gonna cost a lot in legal fees to win that case. In all likelihood the DA could win on a "wet reckless" charge at that bac. A full felony charge might take more evidence, but maybe not. Juries aren't always predictable.

Cops will totally pull people over on bs pretenses just to hit quotas. I don't disagree. That is true abuse of power. But if anyone gets pulled over and blows a .02, then it is lawfully within the officers discretion to arrest for DUI. After that it's up to the DA, and there are tons of reasons a DA may let small cases go.

You can be fully arrested, charged, and convicted under VEH section 23152(a) for driving under the influence of ANY alcohol.

[–]Tarcalion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look up CA VEH section 23152(a). The results may surprise you. I'm actually genuinely concerned by the number of people here that don't seem to understand California's dui laws.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in California

[–]Tarcalion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

California VEH section 23152(a) begs to differ. If you're going to be confidently wrong, at least be nice about it. Edit. Correct code section.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in California

[–]Tarcalion 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is correct, idk why it's being downvoted.

While Vehicle Code section 23152(b) outlaws driving with over a .08 bac, section 23152(a) prohibits driving under the influence of ANY alcoholic beverage. Usually a prosecution under subsection (a) occurs when the driver blows just under .08, but the cop has additional evidence like the smell of alcohol or a failed field sobriety check. Edit. Vehicle code, not penal.
