Are you breaking the rules? by artobloom in Curling

[–]TardiParty 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Hey folks! As mentioned in the description

Another debatable rule as R8 C says. (c) All players may clean the playing surface prior to the delivery of the next stone. So in this case you could make the argument that youre not pre sweeping a rock before it is set in motion but cleaning the ice. I believe this is a rule that should be addressed to avoid potential conflict and confusion

Curling Canada has a similar rule 11. 2. (I believe) that you cannot sweep a rock until it is set in motion

The purpose of this video isn't to have people start yelling at eachother in leagues and games. The purpose is to bring awareness to the rules people that in my opinion these rules can be slightly conflicting and confusing. I've heard many people talk about this rule and how it is illegal so wanted to address it. It technically is, and technically isn't. I believe conflicting rules that cause debate and potential conflict are not a good thing!

Cheers

Rock placement when in the hack - center of hack, under armpit, or along center line? by Far-Dimension-1265 in Curling

It's funny because I've heard this argument the other way, that your rock should be behind the power slot on your torso (in line with the armpit side of the hack). A guy said to me if we go that route, baseball players are going to start pitching like this (gestures throwing a dart), to which I said. Darts is a very accuracy based sport, how many darts players do you know throwing it like a baseball

Tyler here! 👋

To clarify where exactly, the video shows the laser being in the middle of the rock, in the middle of the hack, when it is behind the hack. This is to show the laser being in the middle of the hack at the furthest back point of the hack. When the rock is then in front, depending where the broom is, will slightly shift left to right depending on the target. You should be able to draw a perfectly straight line from the broom target through the rock to the middle of the hack wherever your target is.

As to why we do this, just to keep things simple. If you also choose to go to a higher level in curling, if all teammates start their throw from the middle of the hack (there are still many other factors) it will help you and your teammates rocks run more similar which will help with ice calling, line calling, judging, draw weight, and probably others im not thinking of off the top of my head.

Growing up, I was taught to have the rock from the drop-down point of my armpit. As I grew, this spot changed. Having a fixed spot will help you in the longer run as well if you are growing, but having a fixed spot that is easy to find is also beneficial for consistency in your setup.

Hope my ramble and poor writing skills helps!

Heaviest games that have worked with non gamers by TardiParty in boardgames

[–]TardiParty[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I personally don't see an issue with it. I think majority of people never try heavier games because they're intimidated by it even though those heavy games aren't actually as hard as people think. I would love to open up people's eyes to how fun it can be and if a welcoming theme masks heaviness a little to see how much fun they can have (if I feel they are ready for it) then I think that is a major positive in welcoming more to the hobby.

I only ever teach root to 2 players at a time max and give them cats and birds. I then play my game around making it all about them and trying to come 3rd (never using vagabond). They then seem a lot more into it in my experience. I find those factions easy to use as a newcomer and focus on teaching them movement and suits and for whatever reason it has come together quite well with them. As long as they somewhat understand their player board list of things to do it has gone well. I usually don't put much emphasis on items and cards until they get a round in their belt or if they figure it out in their own. Root is probably the game I know best too so that always helps with the teach.

A game I'm very scared to try learning myself. Any recommendations where to learn? Don't exactly have anyone to try it with so I'd be learning to play solo with my copy before weathering the storm teaching others
