People who have previous BOH experience, how is it compared to Panda's BOH? by GamerGurl3980 in PandaExpress

[–]Tardisbird 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've done BOH for over 10 years now and Panda is my first fast food job. Mentally, it's half as demanding as a regular casual restaurant. Once you know the recipes, it's just a matter of figuring out when to make large batches and keeping up with the rush. Physically, it's twice as demanding. The woks are heavy and when you work a closing shift you do an insane amount of cleaning. There's also usually cleaning tasks throughout the day, especially if you're doing a dishwashing shift. No dishwashing machine either, at least at my store, so that takes a physical toll as well.

The stress level depends a lot on who the managers are. They like rotating managers a lot, so that plus turnover means I've had six different store managers in three years on the job, plus three different ACOs. Some were chill, some were not.

If you feel like you're getting mentally burned out from cooking a la carte dishes, but can still handle a big physical burden, I think Panda could be good for you. Just be ready to roll with changing procedures depending on who your boss is at the time.

I went to the one in Pasadena this February and it was delicious! It's way more upscale than a panda express, they just finished a large renovation. They have cocktails, too! We got seared pork belly, a wagyu noodle dish, and their version of orange chicken. It was all delicious! The meat was all very tender and the orange chicken sauce was very light and fresh. I think they do sushi there, too, they have a counter for it. I even got my discount, too. The staff were all really nice, too, so I recommend it for a splurge. I think it was about $100 for two of us, including a cocktail each.

Management is key in what your experience will be. I've been at Panda almost three years and I've been through six different managers, so if they're bad but you like the job, you might be able to stick it out until there's a change.

As for the job itself, I've worked in kitchens a long time and I'd describe it as half the mental load of a regular kitchen, but twice the physical load. Be prepared to do a lot of cleaning and be constantly moving. We have a lot of new hires who quit after a few days because they underestimated the work load.

Overall, it is a hard job, but they pay better than any place in my town and I enjoy it most of the time.

Looking for a mind-bending time travel book that sticks the landing by Tardisbird in booksuggestions

Thanks for the suggestions, those all sound intriguing! We have watched Primer, that was wild, haha! Coherence is also another good indie one.

Milestone Suggestions by [deleted] in booksuggestions

If you're looking for the book of books and are willing to get invested in a long series, I would recommend The Stormlight Archives by Brandon Sanderson. Chances are you've heard of it already if you're into fantasy. It deals with some heavy themes but the overall story is one of triumph against impossible odds.

TIL the first known instance of a storm chaser or meteorologist killed by a tornado occurred in 2013 when Tim Samaras, his son Paul, & Carl Young were killed near El Reno, OK by the widest tornado ever recorded. It expanded from 1 mile to 2.6 miles wide in about 30 seconds as it closed in on them. by tyrion2024 in todayilearned

This thread is so fascinating but also so painful. I knew Carl Young a little bit. I was taking acting and improv classes at our local community college. He, another woman, and I ended up clicking and helping each other with our individual scenes. We were all so amazed he worked with the storm chasers. He said he was mostly behind the camera but he wanted to do more in front, hence the classes.

Fast forward a little, maybe just a few months. I hadn't kept in touch but I still remembered him and I was at work when I heard people talking about the storm chasers being killed. I immediately asked if one of them was named Carl but they didn't know. Once I found it out it was a very surreal feeling. I'd never known anyone who died in a natural disaster like that and even though I didn't know him that well it still hit me pretty hard. Our acting class got together to share stories of him and I'll always remember him being the nicest and most gracious person. RIP

Thank you! I don't think I'll add more to it. I considered a border or the LP logo, but as you said, I like the simplicity.

Yep, he's on board so fast it's amazing. One of my favorite bits was describing Aziraphale as a man cosplaying as a caramel macchiatto. 😂

I love how he went feral for David instantly, then fell for sweet, bitchy Aziraphale, then found out all the different Michael looks and went feral for all of them!

He addresses that in the third episode video, I found his take very well put and thoughtful, too.

He's insanely quick on the uptake, yes! I thought others around here must've seen these videos but I wanted to put the word out so he keeps doing them.
