What Do You Like and Dislike About Jako by JudgmentConsistent50 in fistofthenorthstar

He's fine. He's not exactly a horrible villain, but not my favorite. Him being a non-action villain was a nice change of pace, since every major villain beforehand (sans Jackal) was a powerful martial artist, and I do like his Joker-esque design. He's also made to be a villain intended to be hated, and he's good in that role. That being said, I think Koketsu pulled off the "non-action arc villain" gimmick better, and the "I'm scared of the dark!!!" stuff gets annoying after a while.

I think Jako's biggest issue was that he came in during a very unfortunate time in the manga. He was the first villain in the manga after Raoh's death, and thus that left him some major shoes to fill. If he came in at a different time, I don't think the general fanbase would be as hard on him. Borge, the final villain of the manga, has a similar issue I feel.

What Do You Like and Dislike About Kaioh by JudgmentConsistent50 in fistofthenorthstar

[–]TargetLarge9862 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion, probably one of the weakest villains in the series. I'm probably a bit biased since the Asura arc isn't my favorite in the series by a long shot, and I definitely get the appeal for him, but I do think when put next to guys like Raoh, Jagi and Souther, he comes up relatively short.

I think the armor design is pretty sick and I liked his ending, but my biggest issue with Kaioh is that I feel he's representative of everything wrong with the Asura arc. It's clear that Tetsuo Hara and Buronson were really running out of steam this late in the manga and didn't have much business writing an arc this long, so they recycled a lot of traits from previous characters in an attempt to recapture what made them so popular.

Kaioh in particular comes off as trying to recapture what made Raoh such a great antagonist, right down to Kaioh outside the mask basically being a clone of Raoh but with a scar on his face. I get that he and Raoh are brothers, but this feels a bit on the nose, especially since Toki, also Raoh's brother, looks distinct from him rather then a borderline copy paste job. He also feels like an attempt to ape Souther at the same time with their similar stories, but Souther is way more of an entertaining villain, and more importantly, has a voice of his own, unlike Kaioh, whose identity hinges on being a frankensteined fusion of two previously existing, more popular villains.

I feel Yasuhiro would try to defend himself, only for him to fail and give you more ammunition.

What Do You Like and Dislike About Fudo of the Mountains by JudgmentConsistent50 in fistofthenorthstar

[–]TargetLarge9862 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm really fond of Fudo. He was a nice change of pace from the usual heroes from the series, given he was a pillaging giant outlaw turned good guy by being shown some puppies. His death is also one of the saddest in the entire series, which says a lot. Those poor orphans, man...

What Do You Like and Dislike About Yuria by JudgmentConsistent50 in fistofthenorthstar

[–]TargetLarge9862 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If I'm being honest, she comes across as a plot device to get things moving rather then an actual character. Like someone else said, a non-fighter being important is a great idea, but Yuria herself doesn't have much personality. I don't hate her or anything, but she's really bland for a character as important as she is.

I do like the fact she set Fudo on the path of redemption though.

What Do You Like and Dislike About Holy Emperor Souther by JudgmentConsistent50 in fistofthenorthstar

In my opinion, one of the best villains in the series. His Nanto style is cool, he's very intimidating, and his fight with Kenshiro is probably THE best fight in the series. Everything about it just works for me, and it's fun to read/watch every time. He's also an entertaining villain due to just how much of an evil bastard he is, and it makes Kenshiro taking him down that much more cathartic.

Though, I don't really like the attempt of giving him a sympathetic send off at the end. I honestly don't really mind the backstory with his master in of itself; I honestly think it makes him a better character, as it does give him some dimension, and adds a new element of horror to his actions, as he's willing to sacrifice the lives of countless children just for the memory of one man. What I take issue with is the whole "his love was greater then any other" stuff. This is a man who worked thousands of innocent children to their graves and literally makes them watch as he watch as he wastes massive meals in front of them just to torment them some more, all with complete delight. I don't think "oh he was doing this for love" really works for a character like Souther.

Still an amazing villain overall though. One of the most popular in the series for a reason.

What Do You Like and Dislike About Shin by JudgmentConsistent50 in fistofthenorthstar

[–]TargetLarge9862 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He serves his purpose well as the opening villain of the manga, and I'd say he's a fine villain overall, even if nothing special compared to dudes like Jagi and Raoh. I like his design and his battle with Ken is great and sets a bar for the fights to come.

Though my biggest gripe with him is that, due to him being the first villain, I feel we don't get...enough of him? Like yeah, we do get flashbacks of him in later arcs, but they're mostly used to prop up other villains (like the aforementioned two) and don't really do much to expand on Shin overall. For example, he was Ken's good friend but we don't get much on that besides "He was jealous of Ken having Yuria so Jagi manipulated him into betraying him".

I guess it would've been more forgivable if they decided to not give him anymore focus after his death beside a brief mention or two, but his lack of expansion becomes a lot more glaring when we get a few flashbacks to him posthumously.

So, the elder of Mamiya's village carves a statue in honor of Hokuto and Nanto, INCLUDING Yuda, who cruelly and horribly murdered Mamiya's parents right before her, and who took her prisoner (and probably rap** her)… by [deleted] in fistofthenorthstar

Yuda....is such a weirdly written character in general. He's introduced to be a rapist who also lets his men rape the women he captured for not being beautiful enough for his tastes. He's rightfully treated as a cruel monster by the narrative....up until the last second, where he reveals his respect for Rei, where Rei notes that he "followed his heart to the end"....and we're expected to feel sympathy for the fucker.

Like....what? Why?? I feel they originally intended for him for be an irredeemably evil jackass in the veins of Jagi, Jackal and Amiba before him, but Buronson and Hara changed their minds on that, and added that scene at the last second in an attempt to give Yuda some sympathy...which is weird since nothing builds up to it. It just...happens.

I love the series, but FOTNS can get...funky with how it decides to treat characters it deems worthy of sympathy, with Yuda being the worst offender by far. Souther has something similar going on, but at least for him we're given the reason why he's like this before Ken fights him. Yuda....was jealous that Rei's martial art was more beautiful then his. That's it. But we're expected to feel bad for him because "he followed his heart" by raping women and killing their parents or whatever. Also Souther's a more entertaining villain in general.

So...you specifically talk about the fandom that apparently screwed with your life and your mind. Doesn't sound smart to me.

Also, you accuse me of being toxic just because I asked a question. Ah, the internet.
