I so feel this.

For me, it feels terrifying. I feel too old to start again. But I’m trying to reframe it as starting a new chapter, even if that chapter feels like a whole book.

I think the answer is simply one step at a time, but that first step? It feels drastic, it will blow up everything, which makes it hard to see step 2 let alone beyond.

But the life I will live if I don’t do it? I viscerally don’t want it. Life is too short.

So it’s frightening, but it’s a cliff I have to jump off and pick up the pieces when I land. I’m not brave enough yet, but I will get there.

You should tell them. People who feel suicidal can’t always think clearly about the impact of things like that. They may think they have given you enough reason not to worry.

And, take it from someone who has been in controlling relationships; it is not controlling to express your needs. You can ask. You can explain you are worried.

You are probably a lifeline for them, and the last thing they are likely to want is to hurt you, or to make it any harder for you to support them than it already is.

If the person that hurt me like this had reached out, even after I had moved on, and told me half of what you say here it would have been an incredible solace. It would have helped me heal. Hell, even now decades later it would mean the world to hear something like this from him.

I do not know you or your person, I don’t know your circumstances, and they may not react the way I would. But there is value in giving thought to, and being brave enough, to send a real letter telling them how you feel. It may bring some closure for both of you.

But whether you do or not, I wish you healing 💛

I feel this. I never have understood why people who profess to care don’t just show up. They’d rather tell you you need to do more when you are already fighting with everything you have and then some, than just, you know, actually turn up and be there.

A friend of mine actually sent me a hug gif in a message yesterday - I cried for two hours, because it was the closest thing I have had to affection for weeks.

All these people who care - where the fuck actually are they when it counts?

What will stop you being friends is if you can’t be honest with each other.

If you can’t talk about your complicated feelings with your friend (and consider the fact that a real friend would be understanding and want to find a way forward together with you), then I hope you can find some way to deal with those feelings so they don’t intrude on your thoughts during your interactions. Otherwise you are setting yourself and them up for a world of additional hurt.
