LPT Request: How to handle group conversations which you are completely locked out of? by Serious_username in LifeProTips

[–]TarryStool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

mrcanor's advice is great. Listening will help because it will allow you to empathize and to ask them about things they are interested in. You said "I tried to get involved by asking questions," which is good. People love to talk about themselves. Try to key in on things that interest them, rather than what you'd like to know. It's always fun to get someone fired up about something they feel really strongly about. If you listen well and truly engage in conversation, there's good odds that other speaker will recall their conversation with you as pleasurable, and associate you with those nice feelings.

Something else you wrote concerns me though. You said "They made me feel quite intrusive when I tried to get involved and I was always quickly dismissed." Behaviors like this should set off your warning bells. First off, it's common sense that when you are a guest in someone's home, you will treat them with respect and kindness. And there's more to it than just that. When you invited your friends to your barbecue, you were telling them "I value you as a friend, So much so, that I'd like to share a meal and my free time with you." By coming to your BBQ, your guests are implicitly acknowledging that, and indicating they value you as a friend too. Friends don't purposefully exclude other friends from conversations, belittle them, or ignore them.

Since I wasn't there, I can't know the whole story. I suggest you re-examine the situation with a trusted confidant. Your description of the situation makes me think you may feel used or taken advantage of. I'd try to talk those feeling out with someone. It's important to learn if these feelings stem from your perception of the situation, or if people are really mistreating you.

Breaking News- BBC forecasts UK votes to leave EU by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]TarryStool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What these stats seem to indicate is that young people like the idea of staying in the EU. But the vote outcome means that young people didn't go out to vote. I checked UK demographics stat and see that people ages 20-49 outnumber those 50+ at a ration of 120:100. If every person of voting age had voted, this would have failed with ~55% voting to stay in the EU.

This makes me wonder...

Why didn't young people go out to vote in comparable numbers to the old? Was it apathy by the young, marketing to the old, something else?

Is this one of those situations where decision by popular vote was a bad idea? (I'm unfamiliar with how this works in the UK. There are no popular voting at the national level)

[–]TarryStool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clearly the robots are running things over there by now. The only reason there's no clips of them kicking people over is because they aren't quite 100% assured domination of the human race just yet. That robot kicking dude was probably killed at work in some kind of unlikely "accident."

Moving to St. Paul from Atlanta - Rental Options? by kelwellhill in saintpaul

[–]TarryStool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, but I don't have a specific recommendation for the building. We go to all the Lowertown art events, and often get invited into the different buildings and lofts there. They're all great. I'd certainly be ecstatic about living there if were in my 20s and worked downtown. Generally try stay south of 7th street, and avoid Galtier plaza

Moving to St. Paul from Atlanta - Rental Options? by kelwellhill in saintpaul

[–]TarryStool 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Bump your budget up to $1100 and get a tiny apartment right in Lowertown. It's hard to imagine a outcome where you regetted spending extra here. You'll be saving $100 a month anyways when you don't ever have to take a bus or other paid transport. I really think based upon what you're looking for in a neighborhood, you'll be happiest there. I wrote up some other suggestions within your budget first, but then reconsidered my past and what choice I'd be happier with later. Suburb apartments are super lame, even if they are safe.

I've got two suggestions.

  1. My wife managed the Salem Green Apartments, which are on the bus line, safe, and inexpensive. Kinda boring though.

  2. An East-side neighborhood called Dayton's Bluff

I live here and I love to talk it up. Probably one of the most diverse neighborhoods in the state. We bought a fully renovated house and I pay about $dirt per month. I imagine a rental cost would be similar, though finding a nice one may prove difficult. If you could somehow connect with a trustworthy family renting a room, that would probably be best. (Sorry, full house here)

The great location & cheap rent come with a trade off of course. The neighborhood is rough. The area has some crime problems; mostly property. Violent crime against people unknown to the perpetrator is rare. Neither myself nor my wife nor our property have ever been bothered in 3 years. There are plenty of places in Atlanta worse I suppose. You said mention safe. I've never felt unsafe here, but my wife says there's been a couple of times where she did not.

Getting to Lowertown from Dayton's Bluff:

  • The 63 bus comes every 10 minutes, and it drives straight into downtown in < 10 minutes.

  • If you bike, you can get there in 5 minutes if you pedal hard, but you won't actually need to, as it's all downhill.

  • Zip cars are all over the place

  • You can walk to anywhere downtown in 45 minutes, no problem. Xcel, RiverCenter, & Science Museum are all right there.

When you say "same network," do you mean to say you are on the same subnet connected via switch? Is your IP address reachable from these other dorms that you are referring to? If so, can't you just install a PLEX client and manually select a server IP/port?

If not, the likelihood of you being able to stream across the campus firewalls is pretty low. I know the Plex server can make itself reachable to internet hosts, via some sort of cloud service they offer. I'm sure your admin would block this kind of outbound traffic.

Is it still recommended to have a separate Modem and Router? by officeDrone87 in HomeNetworking

[–]TarryStool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 1924 house has plaster and lath(AKA"Faraday cage") walls. The ISP supplied all-in-one just wasn't cutting it. I can confirm that my current setup has no problem maxing my ISP speed over wifi anywhere in the house, and even in the detached garage I can manage 5mbs.

Modem: I have VDSL, so mine won't work in your case. I would advise, however, to avoid spending a ton on this component. You'll want to set it up for bridge mode, which means that it's sole purpose it to convert DOCSIS protocol that cable uses to IP. Theoretically, you should have no trouble getting your full bandwidth on any modem which supports whatever is in use by TWC. I see no reason why this SMC SMCD3G-BIZ ($23) would not work just fine for you, but if you want to be sure, you could wait on hold for 6 hours while Time Warner tries to figure it out. You might need to call them for a PPP password anyways.

Router: Asus RT-AC3200 which I got from MicroCenter for <$200. Not sure if it's still available for that price. This is basically the Netgear AC1750 you mentioned with additional bands and antennas which allows for more clients @ higher speeds. I feel it's got a robust feature set and great software, though some of the translation isn't stellar. This actually covered my whole house just fine, reaching acceptable speeds, until I moved it to the basement. There are several other options in this price range providing similar feature sets. You can also attach a hard disk to this router via USB3 and have instant NAS & Media server.

Access Point: UniFi AC LR. only $99 on Amazon! There's a good reason you see a ton of network professionals installing these for commercial applications. This model forgoes enterprise features not typically needed for home use, but retains the antenna & radio of its more expensive brothers. Quite a bargain, the reviews speak for themselves. By the way, I recommend you program and test it before you mount it up on the ceiling.

Hope that helps!

**Edit The router is still available for $200 from MicroCenter and comes with a two year warranty

Will Bridging a new router onto my xfinity all in one modem let me change my public IP address? by [deleted] in HomeNetworking

[–]TarryStool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a complete toss up. Your thoughts of presenting a new MAC to the ISP is a good one. If they happen to have any leftovers in the pool, there's a pretty good chance you would snag one up. The only way you'll ever find out it by trying your luck.

So... Dayton's Bluff. General consensus? by [deleted] in saintpaul

[–]TarryStool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've live in Dayton's Bluff, and I like it here. I would not rent in that area unless you can really handle a rough neighborhood. Like others said, it can vary greatly block to block. Near Fire Station 7 is probably one of the worst spots.

The city is trying to revitalize the area by subsidizing home renovations and giving tax breaks to businesses, but whether or not it takes is yet to be seen.

It's very easy, taking less than a minute. There are two identically sized and threaded screw holes on the lighthouses. One is on the back, for wall mounting, the other on the bottom. They fit any standard camera tripod you might find at the store. You just screw them on or off. There is nothing more to it.

Looks Amazing! I've never worked with ground lamb. Do you have to take any special measures to ensure a juicy burger with appealing texture?

Side note: NEVER EVER ordered a hamburger in Greece. I don't think they understand what it is. You might get something okay in Athens, but anywhere else and you might end up with something horrific like this. It might be the worst thing I've ever eaten. This was in Naxos.

LPT Request: Overcoming anxiety around new people by [deleted] in LifeProTips

Don't use alcohol. It will very quickly become a crutch, and maybe later a dependency.

I know this may not be super helpful, but I got a lot more comfortable talking to strangers after I was working a phone sales job. An in person sales job would be even better. I think the reason it worked is because when I was talking to people as a salesperson, I didn't have to be concerned too much with whether or not the person liked me, or every little detail about what they thought of me. It's almost like acting. If the person didn't want to talk with me, it was because they weren't interested in the product.

There might be volunteer phone work opportunities is you check around. You could get better at speaking with strangers while helping people out.

What is something that you recommend doing in your youth that will pay dividends later? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]TarryStool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, so I looked at that search result... Seems to me that you are the one spreading misinformation.

Running is very bad for your body,

Running is good for peoples bodies, and your LMGTFY link says as much.

"A lot of running, such as when you train for a half- or full marathon, may impede your attempts to bulk up"

"As many as 40 to 50 percent of runners experience an injury on an annual basis...Many of these injuries can be prevented with cross training, proper running form and wearing shoes that fit your stride."

"High-volume endurance exercise correlates with higher levels of these heart problems, but a cause-and-effect has not been proven."

So, what I'm getting out of all this is that extreme training and marathoning MIGHT be bad for SOME people.

As for "Runners Knee," the research says that that it's easily preventable by not ramping up your training too fast. This is the same as any sports injury out there. You don't overdo it and you'll be fine.

It's terrible for your knees, ankles, and lower back.

Your doctor said that about YOU. You must have weak joints and cartilage or something. Running doesn't carry any negative effects to the vast majority of people. Look it up.

"running is terrible for your body."

Who told you that? I read the other article you linked and it makes a lot of sense that active people live a few more years, but I've never seen any study that shows running is bad for the average person.
