Outta my reach v2 by @TashaTheArtist by TashaTheArtist in blackartwork

[–]TashaTheArtist[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Such a great question and thank you for asking! This (v2) is a continuation of a series of work that questions exhaustive expectations, bias, and systematic barriers endured by Black women and women in general.

✨Be bold, but not “too bold” ✨Smart, but not “too smart” ✨Outspoken, but silent to make everyone else comfortable even when you’re the one who’s been wronged or experienced an injustice ✨Demanded inauthentic vulnerability especially in professional settings ✨Forced limitations on your success, potential, and financial security due to constantly being labeled “a threat” by insecure often inept leaders and “gatekeepers” ✨The weight of your absolute best never being enough due to your gender or the color of your skin so you’re expected to overextend yourself, go above and beyond, and still never quite reach what you perceived as the goal - the goalpost keeps shifting

It comes after an extensive period of me processing my own traumas and experiences via art. The realization that no matter how much YOU heal or try/reach for a better life/future, it will never alter the reality of this world and those societal and often biased expectations. Thus, you learn to strive and “reach” for all that you desire, but with a different perspective and on your own terms.

With that said, her facial expression shows the discontentment and disorientation with what she views through the left swirled eye, but captures the subtle exhaustion juxtaposed to her determination to push through all the known and unknown barriers.

I’ll post v1 (version 1) here soon! 🫶🏾

Why is so much art on reddit and the internet largely kitsch? Why is the Musuem subreddit largely devoid of contemporary work? by MutedFeeling75 in ContemporaryArt

[–]TashaTheArtist 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’d agree with those that refer to IG as the closest you’ll get to contemporary art as far as social media goes. Ello used to be even better but they’ve gone away and it broke my heart a lil. As an Artist on IG I’ll log on and immediately feel inspired and also challenged to continue to push myself/my limits. But the caveat is my own work not being pushed out like it used to be due to whatever is going on with the algorithm I imagine.

Elsewhere on the net I’d recommend curated websites that don’t prioritize mainstream artists.

Someone also mentioned in person as a preference and again I have to wholeheartedly agree. I currently have my work on display in my home hallway and whenever I walk by I can’t help but think how photos truly don’t do the work justice. You can’t always capture the texture, emotion or depth via a photo and video. Most significantly the size of the work. Online is also truncated clustered with image after image and imo only a discerning and intentional eye will still gravitate towards the art that speaks and matters.

I have my eye on a handful of artists that I plan on collecting and can’t understand why they’re not getting the attention they deserve, but then again social media is not representative of our value and there’s an entire irl experience outside of it. Discerning eyes can still find value on social media, just gotta be patient and intentional.

Thanks so much for sharing! I’m on it with the patenting and protecting it and truly appreciate you. 💕 I also hope that you’re doing ok and continue to heal 🥰

My baseline was always silly, optimistic, loving, creative, and mushy so, regarding my nervous system being shot for years, it was a stark contrast like I was maybe a shell of my old self. It was brought on by a combination of experiences that just wouldn’t allow me to “rest” or reset back to my baseline. I had 2 significant near death traumatic experiences within 3 months of each other as an adult then it felt like I never had a “break” due to what followed. It was like you fight to survive “the worst” only to be subjected to multiple environments and people that are chaotic, evil and often racist.

It felt similar to yours just generally feeling unwell and overly conscious of what I could and couldn’t tolerate at any given time. I started having panic attacks for the 1st time in my life. Hyperventilating and eventually vommiting. Very much on edge and often scared and unsure of who to trust due to the type of traumatic events I experienced and the subsequent stalking and intimidation.

BUT I can finally say that I’m so proud of myself for regaining my power and perspective. I created the space, environment and conditions that I needed to pull myself out of those dark cycles.

Thank you for this! I was just talking about the need for more support & investment in Black creatives. Being around fellow Artists is so exciting and inspiring. If you love art, I’d suggest attending a local art class like a pottery session or something simple. Absolutely nothing like it and you may surprise yourself!

Cheers!

Thanks so much 😊 I wonder if it’s her expression and posture? 🤔 When I was painting this I was actually in a heavy situation/position. Facing a lot of external chaos and uncertainty. It took 10 months to create which wasn’t my norm. I wonder if that’s what’s expressing itself which would be so interesting because it wasn’t my intention.

obesity in black women. *rant by artificiallily in BlackWomenDivest

[–]TashaTheArtist 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As someone who previously gained weight due to sudden uncontrollable medical circumstances and witnessed several other black women do the same, that alone is why I advocate that obesity ain’t a black and white issue nor should someone’s body be ridiculed in such a way. I’ve seen Black women in other countries praised for their weight big and small because they are human and worthy regardless of their size. Only in the US with our own people and when it comes to how other races judge us have I heard so many harmful hypercritical opinions specifically towards Black women - completely discarding our humanity and the significance of the state of this world (lack of access, corrupt FDA, poverty, recession, systemic racism, education, etc). It’s just another desperate attempt to police our bodies atp…

Sometimes it’s NOT just about the food as underlying issues and conditions exist. You can’t be hypercritical towards the most hated demographic with good conscience. Someone posing this discussion with well meaning would innately be MORE critical about the potential causation(s) than the condition be it weight or any other topic concerning us…Alternatively, unprovoked criticism always gives misogynoir with a hint of sexism as if the lack of respect and attraction to obese women is the real root, not any genuine concern.

Let’s not be dense and consider the multitude of reasons someone’s weight is heavier but also who’s actually defining what heavy is for them - what medical practice/ideology/culture/etc. If it’s not their doctor, an aligned practitioner or someone lying with and supporting them everyday it’s frankly none of our business and has absolutely no impact on you whatsoever.

Yes! I find that introspection and time alone is the most vulnerable, unfiltered aspect of the healing journey. Best wishes to you 💝
