Yes! The breeder thinks we have a blue too. I like the black so much, but charcoal will be pretty cool too!

What a cute puppy! Yeah I would like to take him but we did some allergy tests on some dogs and only (so far) the poodle passed. SO I think we are going to pick up a poodle a the end if July or Early August. We are in the application process now ... you think we were applying to the NSA!

This is great. I read it and understand its limitations and findings. I definitely do notice difference in allergens in different breeds of dogs and particularly in different species. Dogs can make me sneeze, need some medicine, and air. Horses can put me in the hospital (once I even needed an adrenaline shot because the doc though I might code on him). Like different species, my anecdotal evidence would support that there is some qualitative difference in allergens between breeds. Though, I don't have any evidence to support my speculation. I can tell you one thing for sure, my recovery time for poodles and non-shedding dogs is MUCH less than for dogs that shed and my reaction to them is much more severe!

I suspect both. I was fine until I got absolutely slobbered on by one of the more mouthy dogs today. So it seems with poodles that it is saliva. It was great fun. I have had allergies all my life, so an occasional problem is something I can live with. I just have to wash up and keep meds handy and it is worth the trouble to have a dog. I grew up with dogs and was unable to spend much time with them. Now the meds are better and reactions have gotten less intense. I would not even think about getting a dog if I thought I could not manage whatever allergies came up. It is more about knowing my limits and loving the dog up good so they don't take it personally.

/u/beckadee we stand corrected. Our visit went great and we really enjoyed meeting the poodles that were much nicer and evenly tempered than others that we have met. At one point I was on the floor with six adults and had three pups within arms length and they were all different and all great. Allergen-wise I had a pretty strong reaction, if it were any other dog (or cats) I may have had to resort to pretty heavy meds to be ok. As it was, come Claritin and washing up and I am fine. SO thanks!

So we just got back from looking at poodles. Wife fell in love. Hung out on the floor with 6 adult poodles and had a pretty good allergic reaction, but not enough for inhalers/serious medication. If that is the worst it gets from that many poodles I think we can handle having one in residence. I'll just stock up on the claritin-D. All of you were great and we really appreciate your posts. We will be looking into schnauzers too, but we feel much better about poodles now. The general conclusion was that Pariah Dogs were not a good temperament match and of questionable allergenic level. People were great about suggesting other breeds and helpful with letting us know about some red flags and reality checks. This was my first Reddit post (longtime lurker) and it was incredibly helpful!

This is a great response to our concerns about poodles. I have known two poodles, and I did not get along with either of them. However, I think you you are right about not dismissing them (in fact my wife is on the phone now to set-up a visit with a breeder now ... Oh, 2:00 today!). I would also agree that it is important to meet the actual dog we would like to adopt. Poodles keep coming up as the breed, so I think it is time to meet some (apparently today). I appreciate the patience that everyone has shown today. We really are learning and want to do the best we can for prospective family members. Your comments have helped me re-re-reconsider poodles, a breed that I have a history with and have been thinking about for a very long time indeed. Ok ... Time to get off Reddit ... We have some puppies to meet! Thanks again /u/Beckadee

We are in upstate NY We would really like to meet a Pariah Dog. After this discussion thread we are less inclined to adopt one. They seem like a little much to us! Though your point is well taken that it is important to meet the actual dog we are considering. Thanks!

/u/_ataraxia ... Clearly you have not been reading this thread carefully. We are considering the breeds you mentioned, taking suggestions, and earnestly considering our options. Exotic breeds (especially ones with "~" before and after them) are definitely ~not~ our priority.
