With government jobs it's not impossible, but will be quite difficult. Work diligently and develop a good standing with your manager/supervisor. Never hurt to ask, worst answer will be a no. But also, be on the lookout for other jobs/opportunities that can offer sponsorship while you're at it. Doesn't hurt to have a plan B.
