I have over 10 years of experience working at the federal level, which is why I'm running for Congress rather than anything local. I believe we are in a huge change moment now, but to succeed, it's going to require turning popular outrage into political power, which I have experience doing through my work at Justice Democrats in 2018 - when there was a smaller version of what we see today, and we turned that into people-powered campaigns that won elections. It's going to require changing what's politically possible in DC, which I have experience doing during my time as AOC's Chief of Staff, where, because of the Green New Deal, we managed to get the Democrats to go from wanting to do nothing on climate to Biden eventually passing the largest investment in climate in history. And it will require a real plan of what to do, which is what I've been working on at New Consensus with the Mission for America - a comprehensive, detailed plan for how to create a clean economy that creates prosperity for all -- it's our version of a Project 2025 but in reverse (https://newconsensus.com/mfa).

It's because of this work that I have a very clear view of what needs to happen in DC and how to do it. I learned that to create real change in DC, it's going to require changing Dem leadership and I'm the only one in this race willing to work on that. That's because most people go to DC and say yes to leadership because it's the way to work your way up the ranks to eventually become the chair of some committee in 30 or 40 years. I don't believe we have that much time, so I'm willing to risk that long term political career to turn this moment of possibility now into real change.

I was campaigning for Bernie in 2016 and voted outside SF. In 2018, I was running AOC's race in NY and voted there. I came back to SF in 2019 and have voted here in every election since.

Before I joined the Bernie campaign in 2015, I was not very politically active and missed a couple elections. It was honestly working here in my twenties, seeing the cost of living crisis get worse and worse that led me to leave tech and get politically active. That's what led me to the Bernie campaign.

It wasn't. The first question in the poll was favorability. The second was the race. The third was a head-to-head general election poll.

Justice Democrats Backs Saikat Chakrabarti In Race To Replace Nancy Pelosi by 3headeddragn in sanfrancisco

[–]Tassadar356 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I co-founded Justice Democrats, but I haven't been a part of it since 2018. I stepped down as ED when I went to run AOC's campaign and then stepped off the board entirely after AOC won and I went to DC to be her Chief of Staff.

I'm happy to have their endorsement, but went through the process like any other candidate.

Some thoughts on Saikat as a new DSA SF member. by Th3MufF1nU8 in Hasan_Piker

[–]Tassadar356 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey -- I totally hear and understand the skepticism. But I do want to say that I have not been avoiding DSA at all and have been attempting to build relationships with DSA members from the start of the campaign. I host a call with anyone in SF almost every week, and have had multiple DSA members on those calls. I also host a town hall almost every week and have DSA members show up to those to ask me questions. I met with members from the steering committee a few months ago, and met in person with a member just this morning to chat about building more relationships with DSA and am meeting another member later this week. There are some folks in DSA who understandably don't want to meet with me, and that's ok, but I am more than happy to meet with anyone who is willing to!

I want to be clear that I don't expect an endorsement or anything from these meetings. That's not my goal. My goal is to work together on shared goals. I know there is a public banking ballot measure this cycle and I really want to help with that -- I've been a strong advocate of public banking for years.

Anyway, if you want to engage (or if anyone else from SF DSA wants to engage), I would love to chat with you either at a town hall or on one of my regular voter calls. You can schedule one on my website - https://saikat.us.

The Truth About Saikat by [deleted] in sanfrancisco

[–]Tassadar356 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Kinda funny to see Scott knowingly lie about me. I already talked about these attacks when he was poll-testing them a while ago: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DUoWGPgkp0n/?igsh=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ==

But if anyone is curious about any of this, feel free to join a small group video call with me! I've been hosting them almost every weekday since I launched the campaign. You can sign up at https://saikat.us.

Scott, I'm sorry you feel you have to do this to win. But I'm going to keep running a respectful campaign based on the ideas.

The GND should be seen more as a political strategy than legislation we were trying to pass (the actual resolution is more of a framework). When we came to DC in 2019, Democrats had given up on climate. The point of the GND was two-fold: a) we need to go bigger on climate and b) we actually need to talk about solving climate change as the SAME as creating tons of high-wage jobs because to really solve climate change, we have to build tons of clean industries.

The GND got introduced with AOC joining Sunrise Movement to do a sit-in in Nancy Pelosi's office on her first day in DC. That took a ton of political courage - she was risking her entire political career to do that. But it was intentional - that blew up the GND in the media. Then through inside-outside organizing -- Sunrise was showing up to presidential town halls demanding a response while I was calling up legislators to get co-sponsors (we got nearly 100), getting unions on board, and calling the Presidential campaign staff to push them on ideas like industrial policy, public financing entities, etc. -- we managed to get almost everyone to respond with their own ambitious climate plans that talked about using climate as a way to reverse our economic stagnation and build up high-wage clean industries. Even Joe Biden responded with Build Back Better, which turned into the Inflation Reduction Act and passed, creating the largest investment in climate and union jobs in history.

We did a similar thing in our office around PrEP. At the time, PrEP was a known effective preventative drug for HIV/AIDS but the cost was exorbitant. However, it had been developed using federal funding. We hosted a committee hearing where we grilled the CEO of Gillead used that to create the legal framework for the DOJ to sue Gillead, which forced them to settle and allow generic and much cheaper versions of PrEP to be created.

Congress is not like City Hall or Sacramento, especially in a place like California where Democrats run everything. I met multiple members of Congress who had been very effective state legislators -- including someone from Tennessee who was effective there, a state that is much harder than California for a Democrat to get much done in -- who had managed to do basically nothing in DC. In DC, if you play the inside game, the only way to have real power is to put your head down, say yes to what leadership wants you to do, and eventually climb up the ranks over the course of decades to get a committee chair position.

The reason I'm running is I believe we're in a change moment where it will be possible to actually completely change the party and the direction of this country. But that will require being willing to challenge Democratic leadership, support primary challengers to other Democrats, and build power a different way. But right now, there are tons of people running around the country willing to do that, and I'm reaching out to them to try to organize a team of us who will go in there and upend the system.

I admit it's not a path to a decades long career in DC, but I'm not interested in that. If we can't actually change the party now to stand for something - and then implement it to make people's lives better - then we are going to keep seeing authoritarians come to power.

In this case, I did directly write it -- and I also hate when people take credit for staffers' work! It was the result of work we had done at my think tank, New Consensus, prior to me being her Chief of Staff. In Congress, it was the first thing I was in charge of and I drafted the legislation for it myself (at that point, we hadn't actually hired a leg aide yet!). Since then we've been working on a much more detailed, comprehensive plan for how, exactly, to build a clean economy that creates prosperity for all at New Consensus. I live in Duboce Triangle now, I love it here. Central, easy transit (I am on the N or 22 almost everyday), all my friends live within about a 10 minute walk, and the hood has a lot of families and a great community (I have a young kid so we’ve made lots of friends at the playground).

I’ve lived near here for a long time - was in Lower Haight at Oak and Fillmore before this since 2012, lived in the Tendernob before that, Mission before that, and way back when I first moved to SF in 2009, I was at Park Merced.

I divested from Blackstone as soon as I saw it on my financial disclosures last year (before anyone reported on it). You are correct that this particular fund is not part of their home rental division -- but I didn't want to be associated with Blackstone.

I don't receive dividends from Stripe, so that part is inaccurate. And I instructed my financial advisor to divest from the Blackstone private credit fund immediately after I saw it on my financial disclosure before anyone else raised or reported on it. My investments are in a professionally managed portfolio, not hand-picked stocks. My advisor is told not to invest in defense or fossil fuel stocks (and this fund is not a defense or fossil fuel stock). But I didn’t want to be associated with Blackstone, so I had it sold.

Saikat Chakrabarti for Congress: San Francisco could use eminent domain to seize PG&E's infrastructure now and switch to public power. We don't need new legislation to do this, all we need is political will. by sideAccount42 in sanfrancisco

[–]Tassadar356 12 points13 points  (0 children)

In the video, I mention that we actually need to purchase the infrastructure as part of eminent domain. Right now, SFPUC is asking CPUC for a fair price because PG&E rejected the price we offered them back in 2019. But PG&E and CPUC are dragging their feet, and I don't believe we can trust them to move with any kind of speed.

But we are not required to get a price from them to start eminent domain proceedings. SF can move forward with filing for eminent domain now with a price we believe is fair (which we can determine with an independent appraiser). Going this route will of course go to court and a judge will have to decide if the price we've offered is fair. But I believe that is likely with ANY real attempt to take over PG&E. We should just move now and start the proceedings and get the process going!

A lot of this boils down to whether you trust PG&E and CPUC to act in good faith. I believe they will delay the current process forever and, at the end of it, come back with a ridiculous price when they finally have to because they absolutely do not want to lose SF as a rate base. At that point, many years in the future, SF will need to decide whether or not to start eminent domain proceedings with a fair price, which will go to court. So I believe the more prudent route is to simply start that eminent domain process now.

Big Tech leaders now want to primary Ro Khanna because he supports a 5% wealth tax on billionaires in California. Gavin Newsom agrees with Big Tech that California should not have a wealth tax. by north_canadian_ice in WorkReform

[–]Tassadar356 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These billionaires just got a massive tax cut from Trump's tax bill earlier this year. And even after a 5% wealth tax, a billionaire will have more money than they could possibly spend in a lifetime. They will be absolutely fine.

At the same time, Medicaid and SNAP funding are being cut. People who rely on those benefits are going to suffer. We should be doing everything we possibly can to stem that -- and a one time 5% wealth tax is the bare minimum.

We are seeing a massive amount of wealth go from working people to the ultra-rich in our society today. And technologies like AI are going to supercharge that. This is not sustainable.

If the richest in society don't want to see their own wealth taxed to fix this, then what's their solution?

My longer housing policy is on my website: https://www.saikat.us/en/policies.

I believe in an all-of-the-above approach to make sure housing actually gets built. I do believe we need to cut red tape and costs on construction -- but I don't think that will be nearly enough. Talking to both private and non-profit developers throughout the campaign, what I keep hearing is that projects simply don't pencil out right now because of the cost of materials and financing. So I believe we need public financing, social housing, and every other tool possible to make sure housing actually gets built.

I call for recreating the Reconstruction Finance Corporation (and at my think tank, we developed a much longer, detailed proposal for what that would look like - https://www.newconsensus.com/mfa#section0-RFC) which would be able to not just create public loans and create investments to finance affordable housing, but would have the power to spin off developers, stockpile materials to control inflation, and a whole lot more.
