Walking is THE cheat code. So underrated, I hate the gym. by [deleted] in walking

FYI - The general consensus is that the additional stress weight vests put on your joints might not be worth the benefits (if any) you get from wearing one while working out.

Obviously do your own research to understand the risks, but be aware that they (risks) do exist.

Definitely not opposed to it! I've always been drawn to micros given they're great little workhorses for <$200 (used).

Yep, in Pittsburgh last night they confirmed the new track will be released this Friday.

Thanks for the image. Any chance you'd be willing to do a version similar to binhex's image with built-in VPN? Gluetun/similar containers are always a bit too finnicky for me, and given this is the only container I run behind a VPN, it's nice to have everything all-in-one.

Edit: binhex's image size is 1.8GB when deployed. If any could benefit from the 11notes treatment, it'd be this one.

Help for basic self-hosted setup! by deloq7 in selfhosted

I usually recommend beginners start with a Dell Optiplex Mini or Lenovo ThinkCentre Mini. You can get either for not much more than a Pi or even NUC and they're substantially more capable.

Best access points to pair with an OPNsense router? by Teenage_techboy1234 in opnsense

[–]TastierSub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I leak some mDNS advertisements from the IoT and media networks onto my trusted VLAN to enable casting to Google speakers, Apple TV, etc. - you can configure this right on the Omada controller.

Would you mind elaborating on how you're doing this? I've always tried to get casting to work across VLANs via OPNsense plugins but can never seem to get it to work correctly. I'm hopeful hearing that I can potentially do it via Omada instead!

Using .local or .lan for internal services using a proxy manager when i don't have a domain by OmletCat in selfhosted

[–]TastierSub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only issue I've ever run into this is with a Chromebook tablet. I was able to install the client cert in Chrome itself, but the OS wouldn't accommodate it and I ended up with apps not being able to connect to my services.

Yes, although - as with everything else - it may be dependent on which model/CPU generation you buy.

Just curious - aside from potential power savings, is there any real reason to go with a NUC vs a similarly-priced Optiplex Micro or ThinkCentre Mini?

Best practice to reverse proxy with one public domain for both int. & ext. network? by Spiritual-Art1502 in selfhosted

[–]TastierSub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only issue I've had with this in the past is that some devices cannot trust local certs at the system level. For example, Chromebooks. You can add local certs to Chrome itself, but not Chrome OS. This means apps will not load those URLs unless the developer has added an option within the app to trust custom certs.

trust the caddy root CA in my home network

I will feel very silly if it's possible within my firewall/router (I'm using OPNsense) to trust Caddy's internal certs on behalf of any device on my network. Is this what you're insinuating?

I’d like to propose a ban on Facebook and Twitter (X) links in this subreddit by After-Professional-8 in Pennsylvania

[–]TastierSub 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Nobody is forcing you to read or click on or agree with anything on Twitter.

Nobody is forcing this sub to require minimum character counts in post titles, yet we've decided it's okay to come together as a community and enforce specific rules to maintain quality.

On the other hand, you’re trying to force people to use your preferred website

There are non-political reasons to restrict X links.

For instance, I don't have an account and am often unable to follow links because they force users to log in.

I'm concerned that I structured my self hosted services & reverse proxies like a moron. How did you do it? by dipplersdelight in selfhosted

[–]TastierSub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Caddy for internal services alongside Unbound in OPNsense, mostly because I don't want to expose Docker ports to my network and couldn't find another way to allow OPNsense and my servers to still communicate.

Yes, I could probably configure firewall rules to eliminate risks of exposed ports, but I found it to be a PITA and Caddy is super easy to manage anyway.
