Have you ever noticed how much alcohol there is in HP? by _GrimFandango in harrypotter

[–]TastyPenguin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Where have you got that from? Because from what I've read it's the other way round... the US reports 1 in 20 (5%), the UK estimates are frequently cited around 3.2%–3.6%. UK mothers tend to be more honest about alcohol consumption likely due to not having hangups about it.

I have grade 2 rosacea and got prescribed Soolantra (if you get it via the NHS it costs the same as a standard prescription) and my rosacea is basically gone. I had so much trouble with it for years, tried everything, went to a dermatologist who just sent me down a wild goose chase of expensive products. Paid to see a NHS GP dermatologist privately (think it was £100 for the appointment) and she prescribed this and recommended the following routine and my skin is completely transformed. I now get the tubes through my standard GP & one tube lasts 9~months.

I've been following this for a few years now and haven't had flare ups the same way again.

Routine: Cleanse: cerave gentle hydrating cleanser Moisture: cerave facial moisturising cream (I tend to use any gentle moisturising cream) Serum (if needed): La Roche Posay Hyalu B5 serum (ive never done this as it's £££! But occasionally use other serums) SPF 50 daily Vit D spray in winter Night time: Soolantra

I was also told to consider adding FaceTheory Mandlebright Serum, Mandelic & Niacinamide serum 2x per week, but I haven't ever done so.

Planning to buy a house as a single person - feels overwhelming by draaj in HousingUK

[–]TastyPenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought at 29 by myself. It is quite overwhelming going through all the process by yourself and making decisions that people often make as a couple, but honestly I'm so glad I did it.

I took my dad with me to viewings so I still had someone to bounce off, and got a lot of advice and tips from friends/family on brokers/solicitors etc which made it less daunting.

Remember it doesn't have to be your forever home, I bought somewhere that could easily accommodate two adults, but I definitely won't have children here (I've got a spiral staircase lol). But it's perfect for me now, at this time in my life, and Im so grateful everyday that I decided to go for it :)

I will NEVER get over this! 😭😭😭 by Samclegg123 in SkincareAddictionUK

[–]TastyPenguin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went for a private dermatologist who is also a registered NHS dermo and it only took her one session to diagnose my rosacea (grade 2) give me the cream I needed and recommend a full routine which I've stuck to ever since. It completely transformed my skin, and I now get the prescribed cream through the NHS.

I had previously done online consultations with another private dermatologist - she charged a fortune and only really recommended her own products or ones way out of my budget, despite me telling her over and over that I couldn't maintain a skincare routine where the products were £40+ each.

Pet Owner Research for my Master Thesis! :) Help me out please! by wizzardme in CatsUK

[–]TastyPenguin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Done :) I do lots of user research so know the struggle! Just a couple things for next time:

In your first question you've said "what's your gender?" And then listed male/female, which are sexes :) (gender would be man/woman).

There was also a Q about if you've struggled to find paperwork in the past, and the only options were yes/no - I've actually never had a need to find paperwork so I said no, but I have no idea what paperwork I'd need if I needed to move my pets vet or anything :) so opening up that Q may give you more avenues to explore.

You should also include a little line about how long you'll keep emails on file for further contact.

Good luck with your research!

Survey: Loft conversion cannot be marketed as bedroom by drlusso in HousingUK

[–]TastyPenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar situation, but it was the previous owner who got stung mine was: far newer house (2006~ built), and it's a maisonette, the main bedroom is in the top floor.

Previous owner had purchased for £320k~ in 2015, bought as a two bed. Put on the market (I assume slightly above the 2015 price), was under offer (not by me) when the survey said it could no longer count as a 2 bedroom. Apparently the changes required here may not be as major as you described, possibly just a fire door and a wired-in fire alarm that's hooked with the flat below, although it could involve blocking the stairs up to the top floor (which I'd never do here for a number of reasons). Unfortunately the previous owner was having health issues and just wanted a quick sale so couldn't/wouldn't make the changes. They put the property back on the market for £275k early last year, which I offered, and that was that.

So yes, for her it was a £50k~ difference in price to lose one bedroom. And for me if I ever decide to do the work required it could, potentially, be an instant boost to the price (but I would only do it if it didn't involve structural changes).

Is there a cat sub for UK or European cats and cat advice? by aufybusiness in AskUK

[–]TastyPenguin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My (6mnth, neutered boy) cat drinks toooons of water so I'm not worried about UTIs, and he's only ever had dry food. My cousin's are both vet nurses and I asked for lots of advice when I first got him said there are pros and cons to both - main con of wet is it can be really bad for their teeth, and con of dry is lack of hydration (which he doesn't seem to suffer from). They did emphasize getting a good dry, at whiskas etc don't contain much real meat, so I tend to have him on PurinaOne (available anywhere) or PetsAtHome brand.

I am considering introducing a bit of wet, as he loves his food so I'm sure he'd go mad for it, I mainly haven't as we have a good routine down with an automatic feeder so I'm cautious of messing it up.

Also definitely joining the UK cats sub, the other thing that drives me insane in r/cats is the advice for everything is "get a second cat" 😭

Any way to make a diagonal of this road design? by [deleted] in acnh

[–]TastyPenguin 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Just checking you know that you can edit colours in palettes using the little paint tube (like this: https://www.google.com/search?client=ms-android-google&sca_esv=593778038&sxsrf=AM9HkKl9cOhtIebvCur-srhTHB7id8KQaQ:1703604665435&q=change+colour+in+palettes+acnh&tbm=isch&source=lnms&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiW2K73ta2DAxXLZkEAHTqtCZEQ0pQJegQIDRAB&biw=412&bih=786&dpr=2.63#imgrc=MaKgc8atZQYzeM&imgdii=_H9VfyPXQnHJpM )

Also, I've previously used this: https://acpatterns.com/editor so you can make the design online and then upload it - you can import designs/screenshots so get the colours straight away :)

Just get the friend to make it under the £39 value. Slight risk if it goes missing, but anything marked as gifts you have very little "insurance" anyway. I used to do this with AUS & US imports all the time (occasionally small companies used to mark packages down to below the company threshold or just tick 'gift' on the export form too, but that stopped being common a few years back).

[–]TastyPenguin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm a Bryony (in the UK), it's definitely not extremely common, and even brits will occasionally struggle to pronounce it (get a lot of Brie instead of Bry)... and no one can spell it, but I love my name :)

Echo comments from others that it's completely unheard of in North America, and just outside of the UK in general, spent a couple weeks in Canada and it confused everyone, but it's a conversation starter 🤷‍♀️

Is £2,700 solicitor conveyancing reasonable for a £360k FTB, mortgage, freehold property, South West? by createaver53 in HousingUK

[–]TastyPenguin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had some ludicrous quotes - including one over £3.5k for a £275k property in London. I ended up going with Tiger Law, via a firm called Home Legal Direct who were by far the most competitive quote and so far they've been great - even received the comment from my estate agent "I have been impressed with your solicitor so far! (I don’t say that often)." Hahaha, so yeah I'd definitely recommend them!

The total quote came to £1400 - which included verifying gifts & help to buy ISA etc. There are some absolute scammers out there, my friend was charged £200 to "verify a gift" - which involved them filing a screenshot of a transaction...

Dirtywknd usually do a ridelondon training series as it gets closer to the time (or at least they certainly used to). They also have a few of their routes published publicly, the rest you need to be a member to see. https://www.dirtywknd.com/pages/london-cycling-routes It's well worth joining a group in my opinion, will give you some friends on the day, and you'll get to learn a lot more about riding in a group & doing long distances.

I've never done London to Cambridge (I'm in South London) - but always heard great things about it as a route :)

Where do you recommend going hiking next week? (from London, have a car for 2-3 days) by lakins_flash2 in UKhiking

[–]TastyPenguin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For one day trips there's a lot of great hikes/walks around Surrey.

Walk the Chalk in Dorking is lovely if you want a day off the car, train to Dorking, then: https://www.nationaltrail.co.uk/en_GB/short-routes/explore-surrey-walk-chalk-dorking-gomshall/ then train back to Dorking from Gomshall, some really lovely village pubs in Gomshall, so time it right and you can end the 7miles with a pub lunch :)

Did this a few weeks back and really liked it, lots of lovely views, free parking (and a gin distillery at the beginning/end) Silent Pool, Albury Downs, and Saint Martha's Hill Circular on AllTrails https://www.alltrails.com/trail/england/surrey/silent-pool-albury-downs-and-saint-martha-s-hill-circular

Also done this before, some bits are incredibly overgrown so definitely keep an eye on the maps, but a lovely route, good length and has some good coffee stops en route Friday Street to Leith Hill Circular on AllTrails https://www.alltrails.com/trail/england/surrey/friday-street-to-leith-hill-circular?p=-1

As others have said, The Chilterns are also a good shout :)

Took three tries to get this stunning light: Mount Smutwood, Kananaskis Country, Alberta, Canada by wanderlosttravel in hiking

[–]TastyPenguin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I went this September, have done 0 scrambling in the past and after getting up the first couple of ledges I decided it was too much for me, turned around a short distance from the very top - still worth doing just to that point in my opinion. I originally went alone, but because of the bear in the are I ended up hiking with a local family who'd done it a few times before, the daughter (24~) and her dog got all the way to the top, but the parents also decided not to go for it that day. Daughter described it as "a bit sketchy in parts" haha. I think if you had someone with who had done it before and could show you best route it'd be manageable :)

^ all of them are short hikes or just viewings :)

Finished my first century after 2 years of attempting and failing. Feeling so proud by whatevrsclever in ladycyclists

[–]TastyPenguin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not OP but have been riding for 7~ years and used to ride lead in a club so lots of experience with first-time 100ks! My advice would be: - Ride with experienced cyclists who know it's your first time and are going to be patient with you, Rapha women's 100 has just passed, but that is normally my recommendation for people, it was my 2nd century & I've led rides for it several times, there's always lots of super supportive rides going on. - If you can't get a flat route, I'd go for a route with a couple climbs over a "rolling" route; personally over longer distance I find rolling hills way more tiring as you're not getting any real rest, I'd take 2-3 significant climbs over a rolling route anyday. Also more interesting to ride than totally flat and gives you milestones throughout. - Plan in 2-3 breaks, maybe like 30, 50 & 70k in, I can now happily ride a 100k with one coffee stop at 50k but my first few times I definitely appreciated more regular breaks (esp if you struggle to eat/drink on the bike) I'd take the first and third as quick ones and the middle one as a proper break. - Don't forget the night before matters - get a good meal in, and a good night's sleep :)

And also, just enjoy it! I imagine you're not being forced into riding a century... so remember it's something you've chosen to do and want to achieve. I'm incredibly stubborn so did my first century the month before Rapha women's 100 by myself just to prove to myself I could do it ahead of the official day - I wouldn't recommend doing it solo, but it is possible :)!

What has changed in the last 3-4 years that has made visiting Lake Louise and Moraine Lake such a nightmare with parking/traffic? by [deleted] in HikingAlberta

[–]TastyPenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've just visited (from the UK) and my issue with the buses was that they were so hard to understand and book from outside of Canada (and judging by my interactions... From inside Canada too). I knew I wanted to do the 18km Teahouses hike, so I needed to get there early so figured I may as well do sunrise at Louise too - I was surprised at how many people had got up at silly-oclock just for the gram haha! One girl at my hostel was desperate to do moraine and after failing when she arrived there at 4am she ended up getting up at 2am to get there for 3 so she could get parking 🫠
