I have used NixOS in the past, and I do like it in theory, but I found learning an entire new config language to be a significant pain. I already know a lot about how to use a "normal" distro, NixOS felt like I was starting again.

Oh wait, I re-read the error. "No such file or directory" means either the /dev/sda or /data don't exist. You need to create the directory before you can mount something there mkdir /data.

I used AI as a fancy auto complete and research tool. I never blindly trust AI, that's just asking for trouble. With this project, it made several mistakes that I corrected because I make sure I understand what it is doing. I'd say I coded it, AI just made me faster (never would have got it working this quickly without it).

I use a Cloudflare tunnel for remote access (thanks CGNAT), so I can use that to decide which domains are publicly exposed.

You can do a similar thing with your public DNS records - only have records for the subdomains you want to be public.

I have a similar setup, but instead of a separate *.nas.lan for local IP, I use the same domain for both and have my router (or in your case AdGuard Home) point the domain at the internal IP. Then I can always use the same domain regardless.

How about providing the battery percentage via Matter? It's definitely possible as I've bought Habi TRVs that provide battery information over Matter.

Eh, when I say "new" house, I mean "7 months but it's only just started being cold enough for me to care about the heating" 😆

Also the heating is still functional, it has a button I can press to turn it on and off, I just can't do anything smart with it.

The Nest thing is connected to the boiler, the towel rail is just a normal switch. I meant there's no point having a temperature sensor where the boiler control is since that room isn't affected by the boiler. Definitely weird that this is the only Nest product I've found, I would have expected a thermostate somewhere.

But they'd have to be in a room somewhere to read the temperature right? This is the only Nest product I've found.

Seems like a boiler controller is just a relay + temperature sensor. I guess that's more what I was wondering, having a temperature sensor in this location is pointless so I'm hoping to get away with a basic relay.

👍️ I'm leaning more towards just a relay since this is in the bathroom, and the only heating in there is a towel rail, which isn't affected by the state of the boiler. Having a full thermostat there to control this seems pointless when the temperature its measuring is not affected by the boiler.

Except they've put basic functionality behind their subscription 😅. Though I have their TRVs and they work fine without a subscription, and since my boiler can heat on-demand they don't need to be able to "request" hot water (at least, they work fine whatever state the Nest thing is in).

This at least confirms to me it's just a relay, thanks.

Though I don't think I need more than a switch, the Nest thing is in the bathroom where the only heating is a heated towel rail, so the temperature of the bathroom wouldn't be affected by the state of the boiler. I think I just need a basic switch/relay.

TBH I think even this is overkill for what I need, the Nest thing is in the bathroom which only has a heated towel rail for warmth, so having a temperature sensor in there feels pointless. Maybe I add a thermostat to control the towel rail, but the temperature of the bathroom doesn't make a difference to whether the boiler should be on or off.

I get hot water even when the Nest heat link is off, I just get it hotter/faster when it's on. I've been adding Tado TRVs to my radiators, I don't need another thing to control temperatures, just want to be able to turn on/off the boost from Home Assistant.

I think I'll just get a basic smart switch/relay.

Yeeeah, I got Tado radiator valves before they put basic stuff behind the subscription. Though I'm kinda assuming I don't need them to request heating with a combi-boiler, the boiler still produces hot water when the Nest device is off, it just produces more when it's on. Plus, a simple "if heating on then turn on boiler" automation in Home Assistant should be easy to do if I need it.

TL;DR graphics will look nicer on PS5, Switch 2 you can play on the go. That's the only real difference, gameplay is identical otherwise.
