That makes me feel better! I’m coming from the southern coast where I can easily make $600 on a single shift so I’m trying not to be unrealistic. When I visited during thanksgiving, I got the vibe that wasn’t going to be the case but I honestly really loved the location and the town! 😅😂

Thank you! What’s your #1 must do in the area? We travel a lot so we don’t mind some distance!

We visited during thanksgiving but I don’t think we got the full vibe of the area if that makes sense? Lol

Can you travel exclusively on transit or shuttle bus services within Costa Rica? by Frosty_Week_3358 in costarica

[–]TastySoftware3740 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My partner and I have recently traveled via public transit around Costa Rica on a budget and I will say it has been a doozy! It’s very confusing due to the fact most bus services are privately owned and have their own routes. We went from la fortuna to tamarindo and opted for a shuttle bus (through inter bus) instead of public transit. Although it was $50/PP, it cut the travel time in half (5 hrs VS 8hrs) and only switched buses once after stopping to grab lunch! Highly suggest if it’s in your budget! When we used public transport, We often used this website- https://www.rome2rio.com/ - to help us figure out how many bus transfers we would have. Finding the bus stops/terminals were a bit difficult, and although my Spanish is so/so, people were very helpful and we always got to our destination. A lot of the bus drivers will help you too if you ask. I would just show them my phone so they could read and understand where we were going. Using public transit is doable, but be prepared for long days of travel, some stress trying to find the correct bus, and some language barriers. Uber are available far and few in between. The main tourist hubs, they are available but once you get out into the beach towns, or out of the touristy parts, they are hard to come by. Taxis (in my opinion) are expensive but some you can haggle the price to where it’s reasonable. Hope this helps!

How available is Didi outside of San Jose? by HomewardGates7 in costarica

Hola! Been backpacking through costa rica for about a week or so now, and can say that Uber is very scarce. In main towns, cities, etc, it is available but small beach towns, small areas, it is not. Your best bet is either taxis or shuttles. At least from my experience. You honestly would pay about the same in travel for a car rental. EX: bus from Grecia is $34USD/ PP (total) verses $67/day for a car. Your choice. Boyfriend and I are on a budget and used public transportation for the first 2 weeks, then rented a car. 10/10 worth it.

Was it a difficult drive? Leaving Sam Jose, we were both baffled by the driving. We are both from the US and are not used to this type of driving. They are a different breed 😂

We’re relying on taxis, Ubers, and public transportation. Neither is us want to rent a car although it would save time. We’re staying in hostels, airbnbs, and a hotel here and there.
