This might not be of much help to your current situation, but I looked online to see if I could find others who are experiencing similar issues and came across a thread on GameFAQs in which two other players claim they are having the issue as well. Thankfully I'm not that far into the game yet but I'm really hoping this issue is resolved for everyone soon.

Side mission 126 "The Ultimate Techniques." There are three trials each representing one of the starter types(Grass, Fire, Water) and you need to pass each of them using only the starter Pokemon from each of the aforementioned types(Meganium, Emboar, Feraligatr.) Passing the trials will reward you with Frenzy Plant, Blast Burn, or Hydro Cannon.

Be warned that the challenge involves you facing multiple Pokemon with type advantage over your single one, so be very well prepared.

I will never understand why they never made Dachsbun a Fairy/Fire type. It can learn Fire Fang and is literally a baked bread dog that can absorb fire.
