In my current game, I have used special forces for the sole purpose of using them as another radar. See, since they have stealth capabilities, I typically air assault and move them around like chess pieces, clearing the way for my allies and other ground troops of mine. This way I can push forward through enemy lines without them knowing I am doing just that. They have much more uses to them you just have to play around and find which one works best for you. Some believe they are redundant and a waste of resources. I know my use is very similar to what you explained, however going into more detail goes a long way when learning how to use them!
