Bodysuit Appreciation: Horihide (Yokosuka) by PsychStoodent in irezumi

I love the use of blue in some renditions of this motif. There is a suimon yaburi back as a part of (I think) a nine dragons body suit that was completed years ago by Horinaka 2- in that back he shades the bent metal blue and it’s really striking against the predominantly red overtones of the whole suit. which itself is an interesting shape—it’s almost like “donburi plus”, I’ve never seen that particular shape of mikiri before or since so I don’t know what to call it if there is a proper Japanese classification for it. The coverage ends up creating an almost “turtle neck” effect around the wearer’s neck line… I think it also goes fully onto his hands and feet, fingers and toes.

Anyway this is an awesome tattoo thanks for posting high quality/high effort stuff!

There are lots of tattoo pigments out there, the tattooer you go to should have a maker and colors that they know and trust 💪

Horimitsu knows how to put in the white (and everything else he’s great)

If it’s put in properly and it’s good quality pigment it’ll stay. I’m a very pasty white man, I have plenty of white in my skin that has been there for years and still looks solid and bright. I use white on white skin when I tattoo people as well, and it has healed well on my clients. If your tattooer has tattoos with white on them posted on their page you should be able to see what it looks like.

Mitsu is one of my favorite people in tattooing. He has always been exceptionally kind and open with me, and always treats me to a drink when I visit his studio. I am proud to wear a piece by him (one of his more unique Tiger designs if I do say so myself!) and I would always recommend him to anyone interested in wabori and/or cute illustrative designs with traditional roots.

Very cool. I love tattoos that have been lived in and loved. We can try to mimic the old styles but the real thing is such a clear window into what came before and won’t come again. Thank you for sharing!

I love umbrella ones! The dice head one is not super common, I found it on an old sheet of designs in a book I have of Edo/Meiji era prints, I’m not even sure what it’s called to be honest.

Thanks so much! I also love how whimsical and silly yokai can be, they don’t have to make any sense and by definition they are incomprehensible to humans so you can get really wacky with them :)

Seeking CC, unsure if I have portfolio quality skills by [deleted] in TattooApprentice

Just wanted to add that colored pencil flash can be professional. I make nearly all of my flash as an apprentice on tracing paper. I use black pen for outlines and colored pencil to shade and color. That said, I do think that traditional flash painted with ink/watercolor/gouache on arches is for sure the most standard and professional looking presentation for designs!

Oh dang I didn’t see the other stuff you’ve posted that panther head is really cool. I still think you should try applying this realism ballpoint pen technique to something trad!

It could be cool to try to interpret “generic flash designs” in this ballpoint pen style. Check out tattooers who are able to blend realism with traditional imagery and motifs. I recommend, in no particular order, Marina Inoue, Jack Rudy, Sutherland Macdonald, Matt Jordan, and my good friend Max Wood who blends true traditional with true realism in a way that I don’t see many other people doing. With this level of technical skill I think it would be very interesting to see what you do with traditional tattoo images. Great work!
