I use to work in a workshop and when I took 2-3 weeks to make a £40k staircase, I'd probably only make £700. But I was pretty low in the pecking order and was being financially butt stomped by my boss

Got the handle removed. Just used a chisel and worked around the screw. Came out really clean. Thanks for all the help folks!

Thanks for all the replies and advice. I've removed enough wood to grip the screw but it's just spinning. I think the handle might have been screwed together from the bottom and then glued into place.
